Sargbau workshop in Offenbach: Creative to deal with death!

An innovative coffin building workshop under the direction of the carpenter Mikel Hogan will take place in the new cemetery in Offenbach at the end of June. Hogan, who comes from Westphalia, launched this workshop in order to deal with the subject of death and farewell in a creative and individual way. The idea arose six years ago after a colleague died of him. The participants should learn to build a coffin made of prefabricated spruce wood parts without using the planer or saw. According to op-online there are still available places for the event that takes place from June 27th to 29th. A preliminary discussion is planned for Friday at 6 p.m.

The workshop aims to enable the participants a more personal coffin design and to address the often taboo topics related to death. Up to 120 screws are used in a coffin furniture, which can also be used as a bench or wardrobe after the workshop. The participants have different views of using the coffin; One of the youngest participants, for example, plans to keep their motorcycle clothes in it.

design and exchange

A central aspect of the workshop is the exchange among the participants. Gregor Schwing from the hospice movement will be present as a companion to take up the emotional and practical questions of the participants. In order to promote a healthy examination of death, other institutions also offer corresponding workshops, such as the Evangelical Church Circle of Hamm. There, people can build both urns and coffins under the guidance of Mikel Hogan and deal intensively with the topic of farewell, as described on Kirchenkreis-hamm.de

The workshops are limited to a maximum of eight participants in order to create a confidential framework. The costs for the coffin building workshop are 465 euros and include material, meals and instructions. It is recommended to discuss with a piety early so that a coffin is available for cremation. In addition, knowledge of woodworking is not necessary, which makes access easier.

expanded offers

In addition to the coffin building workshops, Hogan also offers urn workshops in which the participants can design urns from tree trunks. This form of mourning promotes a healthy examination of death and farewell and creates space for individual design options. This is not just about the manual skills, but also about the emotional accompaniment, as described on brewer-und-hoffen.de

Effective methods include the use of practical exercises and the exchange of experiences in order to promote a lively dialogue about the topics of dying, death and grief. These offers offer the participants not only manual skills, but also valuable insights into the process of farewell.
