500 years of peasant war: monasteries in Saxony-Anhalt rediscovered!

In order to appreciate this historical event, two decentralized exhibitions are opened in Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, which are reminiscent of the turbulent time, in which farmers looted monasteries and rebelled against the existing conditions. The exhibition in Halle not only illuminates the looting of the Klöster Kaltenborn, Himmelpforte and Mallerbach chapel, but also offers deeper insights into the monastery life of that time. Historical quotes, maps and archaeological finds, including gold coins from the Himmelpforte monastery, illustrate the amenities such as water supply and heating in these religious sites. The highlights include excavation tours at the excavation locations, which give visitors direct access to the historical finds.

Another exciting aspect provides the archaeological discovery of a medieval rest area in the former village of Krakow, which was located on an important trading road. These finds, which have come to light for years during the excavations along a planned 37 -kilometer gas pipeline, illuminate the everyday life of people in the 9th century.
The large state exhibition “Uffrur! Utopia and resistance in the Peasant War 1524/25” in the Schussenried monastery is also opened as part of the 500th anniversary of the Peasant War. From April 26 to November 2025, this exhibition shows how the arguments between farmers and the authorities were expressed in the social conflicts of the 16th century. The Middle Ages. Over 150 original exposure, including pilots and historical weapons, offer an intensive insight into the unrest and demands for freedom and equality at that time.A look into the future
The exhibitions in Halle, Sangerhausen and Wernigerode as well as other events around the Peasant War invite visitors to deal with the story and to reflect on their importance for the current social structures. From the political instrumentalization of peasant uprisings in the GDR to the modern challenges, it can also be seen today how crucial the heirs of the farmers were for the basics of democracy and human rights.
