A14 northern extension in Stendal: completion is shaky!
The A14 construction site is taking shape, but the patience of road users is required. Work on the northward extension of the motorway has been going on for years, with the section between Lüderitz and Stendal-Süd scheduled to be completed and opened this year. But there are serious challenges on the construction site that are disrupting the planned timeline. Steffen Kauert, head of the East branch of Autobahn GmbH, reports problems with the settlement time of the subsoil, which means that the forecast completion dates cannot be met. A decision on the possibility of timely completion will be made by the end of the month, with Kauert classifying a postponement as “problematic” as winter weather could cause additional months of delays. In the worst case, there could even be a need to re-conclude contracts with construction companies, which would further complicate the situation. This is reported by mdr.de.
The northern extension of the A14 is not just a regional project, but the largest new motorway construction project in Germany. The entire route from Magdeburg via Wittenberge to Schwerin stretches over 155 kilometers, of which 97 kilometers run in Saxony-Anhalt. Work is currently underway on the six-kilometer section of the northern extension from Lüderitz to the B188, which is scheduled for completion at the end of 2025. Costs of around 170 million euros are estimated for this section. There are also delays in the renovation of the Lüderitz exit and in the departure release, which was already planned for February 2025. This information comes from mz.de.
Progress and challenges
A look at the construction progress shows that some sections of the A14 are already passable. However, the challenges remain significant until it is fully completed. The crossing of the Uchte and the three railway lines in particular entails technical difficulties that can disrupt the schedule. Construction work between Dahlenwarsleben and Wolmirstedt has also been progressing since December 2023, although completion is not expected until 2029. The remainder of the section from Lüderitz to Osterburg is due to be fully completed by 2028, requiring significant progress throughout the northern extension of the A14. autobahn.de highlights that the total costs for all construction work are over 2 billion euros.
The project will also lead to an economic boom in the region as local companies will benefit from the construction work. With around 512 employees, Ost Bau is the largest company in Stendal and Salzwedel, which clearly shows the positive impact of the construction site on the local economy.
It remains to be seen whether the upcoming weather conditions and construction work will proceed smoothly in order to meet the ambitious schedules. Drivers and residents will certainly be looking forward to the future development of this important transport axis.
