Tree falls on road: 15-year-old moped driver injured!
On September 7, 2025, a tree fall in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel caused a stir. At around 11:33 a.m. a tree fell on the L27 and hit a 15-year-old moped driver. The teenager suddenly found himself on the ground and had to be taken to a hospital in Stendal for an examination. Comrades from the volunteer fire department were quickly on the scene and took care of clearing the road between Algenstedt and Kassieck so that the danger spot could be removed quickly. According to [Zeit], the situation was extremely dangerous for the moped driver, but fortunately he escaped relatively unscathed.
The afternoon of the same day was under a similar sign of danger. At around 2:50 p.m. a tree crashed onto the B 246 between Kuhfelde and Salzwedel. A 67-year-old driver was driving his Toyota when the tree suddenly fell onto the road from the left. The impact not only damaged the vehicle, which ultimately had to be towed away, but also the guardrail. While the person who caused the accident, and therefore the driver, did not suffer any physical damage, he was visibly shaken and was taken to hospital to be on the safe side. The material damage is estimated at an upper four-digit amount, as [Tag24] reports.
Tree accidents on country roads
As the reports of these two incidents show, tree accidents on rural roads are not a rare phenomenon. A look at the statistics from the German Road Safety Council (DVR) is alarming: 46% of fatalities on country roads were in accidents with fixed obstacles, and more than half of these were trees. The probability of colliding with a tree when leaving the road is nine times higher than if the side space is clear. This is a concerning reality that should not go unnoticed, as the [DPR] details.
In order to counteract this source of danger, the DVR relies on a number of measures to combat tree accidents. This includes the development of guidelines that stipulate that trees must be planted at a critical distance of at least 7.50 meters from the edge of the road. In addition, accident-prone routes should be secured with special protective devices. These prevention strategies can help reduce the number of tree accidents for years to come and ultimately save lives.
Given these findings, it is essential for authorities to focus on road safety. It is up to all of us to raise awareness of such risks and consider how we can make the roads safer. After all, no one wants to hit a tree on the road - be it a car driver or a moped rider.
