Drastic storm damage: campsite devastated after storm!

Severe storms affected Saxony-Anhalt, especially the Altmark region, on Thursday afternoon. After the storm and heavy rain left a trail of destruction, the local fire departments reported around 500 calls by the evening. A campsite near Stendal was particularly affected, as it was badly damaged by fallen trees and broken branches. The guests' tents and caravans have been hit hard, so entering the site is currently not possible. The guests have left and the campsite and the adjacent forest swimming pool will remain closed until further notice, as borkenerzeitung.de reports.

Firefighters spent days clearing numerous fallen trees that were blocking roads, cars and gazebos. There were major problems with flooded railway underpasses and loose roof tiles. Rail traffic between Hanover and Stendal was seriously affected, with numerous train cancellations and delays in long-distance traffic. The technical assistance on site was provided by the Technical Relief Agency (THW) and the volunteer fire department in Stendal, which worked tirelessly to repair the damage.

Special challenges for the emergency services

The situation was particularly tense in the districts of Stendal and Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, with over 200 operations, where the fire brigades primarily removed fallen trees on roads and vehicles. There were also 15 incidents in the Harz district in which trees briefly blocked federal highway 81. In Gardelegen, the city listed 106 operations with around 170 emergency services, whereby cemeteries, parks, playgrounds and daycare centers had to be checked to avoid impending dangers from falling trees. Due to these dangers, the cemetery in Gardelegen remains closed until further notice. mdr.de states that fortunately no injuries were reported.

Climate crisis and extreme weather conditions

The devastating weather conditions are not only causing concern in Saxony-Anhalt. The climate crisis is becoming increasingly evident nationwide through extreme weather events, as bmel.de reports. Events such as the 2018 drought and the 2021 flood have already caused significant damage to agriculture. Although Germany is considered a relatively safe country when it comes to natural disasters, the frequency of such extreme weather events is increasing. The need for climate adaptation and the creation of reserves for agriculture are more important than ever.

The federal government has responded to past natural disasters with aid programs, but responsibility for aid after natural events lies primarily with the states. In the case of events of national proportions, such as flood disasters, federal funds can also be made available to provide support. The aim is to provide quick and uncomplicated help for affected companies in order to sustainably secure agriculture in the country.
