No more consumption: long-term campers in fear of their places!
In Arendsee, a popular destination for camping enthusiasts, recent developments are causing excitement among long-term campers. More than 50 long-term campers at the idyllic Süßen See recently received notices of termination, which is causing turmoil and uncertainty for everyone. The campsite at Schachtsee in Wolmirsleben had to close in April 2025. The operator of “Konsum” at the Arendsee campsite is now also looking forward to an imminent end: She has announced that it will be closed at the end of October 2025. This is particularly unfortunate since “Consumer” was a valued point of contact for campers for decades, providing them with breakfast and hot food.
The operator, which belongs to “Luftkurort Arendsee GmbH”, is forced to enforce the campsite regulations of the state of Saxony-Anhalt until March 1, 2026. This regulation requires that no permanent annexes are permitted on campsites such as the one in Arendsee, and for convenience many long-term campers have erected annexes that exceed the maximum permitted size of 40 m² plus 10 m² for an awning. However, this practice was tolerated by the operator in the past.
Regulations and challenges
The applicable regulations are based on the Saxony-Anhalt building regulations, which lay down various definitions for campsites and the requirements for them in Section 84 Paragraph 1 Nos. 1, 4 and 5. According to these regulations, campsites may only be used for the temporary setting up of more than three caravans or tents, and the pitches must maintain greater distances from wastewater points. Another component of the regulation is compliance with fire protection regulations - such as minimum widths for access roads and fire protection strips.
In the midst of this regulatory challenge, the campsite's new manager has begun to inspect and, in some cases, remove the illegal cultivations, which has already led to emotional reactions from long-term campers. Katharina Günther, an affected camper, complained about the disrespect of the operator of a drinks cart, which is perceived as direct competition to “consumption”. The closure of “Konsum” is regretted by the mayor of Arendsee, Norman Klebe (CDU). He plans to find another organization to resupply the vans and campsites.
The view
The situation remains tense. The operating company now has to deal with the emotional reactions of the campers while at the same time implementing the requirements of the regulation. It remains to be seen how things will develop in Arendsee. The closure of “Konsum” and the terminations of long-term campers show how important it is to maintain a respectful and transparent dialogue between users and operators in order to maintain a harmonious community on the Süßen See.
It is clear that the regulation not only raises legal questions, but also affects the quality of life of campers on site - a fact that many in Arendsee do not take lightly.
