Water shortage in Saxony-Anhalt: New bans affect consumers!
In Saxony-Anhalt, the ongoing drought is causing increasingly serious problems. Several regions have already restricted water withdrawals from rivers, lakes and wells to address impending water shortages. According to Zeit, districts and independent cities have responded to this threat by issuing concrete bans or initiating their review.
Such a measure comes into force on July 1st in Dessau-Roßlau, where citizens are only allowed to water with a watering can between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Similar regulations already apply in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, where water withdrawal has been prohibited from June 26th until the end of September. The Jerichower Land also banned extraction from surface waters on June 28th, while in the Mansfeld-Südharz district pumping from rivers and lakes will be severely restricted from June 30th.
Challenge for agriculture
The drought is also hitting agriculture hard. Farmers and winemakers report serious water shortages, which not only threatens crop yields, but also sparks discussions about climatic changes and their impact on water supplies. A comment in the MDR points out that, for example, the richest percent of the population produces more greenhouse gases than two-thirds of the world's population and that responsibility for measures against climate change is apparently not equally distributed MDR.
The realization that current water security measures may not be sufficient is also supported by the WADKlim research project. There, solutions for sustainable water management are developed, which are part of the German adaptation strategy to climate change. Climate change as well as other factors such as water quality problems and increasing water withdrawals are leading to a complex situation in water availability in Germany Umweltbundesamt.
Joint efforts are required
The lower water authorities in Saxony-Anhalt are working together to create uniform regulations to counteract the water shortage. While some districts such as the Wittenberg district rely on information offerings, the population in other regions receives support through stricter regulations. In Anhalt-Bitterfeld, work is already underway on a new general decree to effectively control water use.
The challenges of climate change are clear: future dry periods could further reduce water availability and potentially lead to conflicts of use. It is therefore essential to actively pursue the topics of water retention and efficiency and to strengthen cooperation between user groups.
It remains to be hoped that the measures taken not only help in the short term, but also promote long-term solutions to secure water supplies in times of climate change. If we manage to include natural ecosystems more closely in water management considerations, this could also lead to a more equitable distribution of subsequent water resources.
