Berkau is blossoming: open gardens attract garden lovers!

Gardens are true oases, and a very special one will open next Sunday, June 15, 2025, especially in the Saxony-Anhalt region. The Open Garden Day promises blooming diversity and exciting encounters with passionate garden owners. Particularly noteworthy are the Thinibels from Berkau, who created their 2,500 square meter garden over 30 years ago. Christiane and Karl-Heinz Thinibel used to grow tobacco and cucumbers in the GDR and kept over 100 chickens. But after reunification, demand for their products turned out to be difficult. So they transformed their former kitchen garden into a blooming oasis, in which 2,000 square meters are now reserved for flowers and only small areas for tomatoes and ornamental pumpkins. Loud MDR The Thinibels are happy to have been part of the “Open Gardens” campaign for ten years and to share their passion with others.

What does the Thinibels' garden look like? Here visitors will find a combination of trees, shrubs, perennials and plenty of space to relax. A walnut tree that is over 100 years old and an inviting oasis of shade complete the picture. When their garden was first opened, they welcomed 400 visitors who were asked to throw a nut through a hole in a wooden gate. Such personal anecdotes make a visit to an open garden special.

A network of diversity

And the Thinibels are not alone. The “Open Gardens” campaign covers around 70 gardens in Saxony-Anhalt, which present different garden styles and arouse the public’s interest. Christa Ringkamp from the Saxony-Anhalt Garden Academy highlights the increasing enthusiasm and diversity of participating gardens. Homeowners are invited to open their gardens to residents or guests. The only important thing is that they are willing to talk about their plants and projects.

The day also offers a good opportunity for culinary delights, as the Thinibels invite their visitors to linger over coffee and cake brought by the Berkau kindergarten support association. With their plans to enjoy their garden all to themselves in the future, the Thinibels cleverly balance between hospitality and retreat.

A prosperous future

The open gardens in Saxony-Anhalt are currently experiencing an upswing. More and more appointments offer the opportunity to discover private garden paradises and exchange ideas with other garden lovers. From the Garden blog It is reported, for example, that numerous private gardens will open in Halle on May 25, 2025 and that other cities such as Aschersleben and Dessau also have exciting dates up their sleeve. These garden initiatives not only promote a love of nature, but also bring people together and strengthen a sense of community.

A colorful range of garden styles is available to visitors. From historic parks to show gardens to private gardens, there is something for every taste.

If you want to discover the wonderful world of open gardens, you should mark Sunday in your calendar - the blooming nature invites you to immerse yourself in a colorful and relaxing break!
