Criticism of Roitzsch landfill: City demands strict control and safety!

In the region around Roitzsch, where the DK II waste disposal site has been in operation since 2015, there is a lot of simmering activity. The communities of Sandersdorf-Brehna and the surrounding area have had serious concerns about the safety of the landfill and its impact on the environment for a long time. In the middle of these discussions, the city of Sandersdorf-Brehna commissioned a report that brought to light worrying results about the long-term safety of the landfill. The state government in Saxony-Anhalt has also brought this issue up, which shows how important this issue is not only locally, but also regionally. According to MZ, the last discussion about the landfill took place in November 2024, when the environmental and economic committees of the state parliament met together.

There are many different ways in which concerns about the landfill are expressed. Citizens are not only worried about the stability of the system, but also about the groundwater level, which may suffer as a result. These concerns are by no means unfounded, as the landfill is located in the middle of a residential area, which affects residents on a daily basis.

Monitoring and responsibility

The monitoring of landfills, especially the high waste landfill DK II, is of central importance for maintaining safety. Nationwide, only pre-treated or non-recyclable waste with low emission potential may be deposited in such landfills. The responsible authorities, especially the Düsseldorf district government, are responsible for ensuring that these requirements are adhered to. BRD NRW regularly carries out environmental inspections on these facilities to ensure that everything works according to legal requirements.

There are 45 approved landfill sites in the region, covering a wide range of waste classes. What is particularly striking is that Class II landfills dominate in terms of numbers and many are now entering the decommissioning phase. Monitoring regulations are strict and govern everything from admission to aftercare.

Measuring points and openness

For those who are interested in technical details and measuring points, GRUVO offers a comprehensive list of measuring points that are listed in detail in different regions, such as in Neuried or Bad Dürkheim. Each measuring point is provided with a specific identification number, which makes tracking easier.

The concerns of the population and the results of the report now require that the responsible authorities take action as quickly as possible. Residents and communities are rightly demanding more precise monitoring and more transparency in the processes surrounding the landfill in Roitzsch. It's not just the health of citizens that is at stake here - it's also about valuable groundwater protection in the region.
