Mega project in track construction: Berlin–Bitterfeld railway line closed until December!
The railway line between Berlin and Bitterfeld is currently being brought into shape. The route is currently completely closed while Deutsche Bahn carries out a comprehensive track renewal. Over 130 kilometers of tracks and 90 switches will be replaced to increase traffic safety and travel quality. This central measure was launched on Monday in the Wittenberg area, where one of the largest track construction machines in the world is in use. This monster machine weighs an impressive 650 tons, is 700 meters long and can renew an impressive 200 meters of track per hour MDR reported.
Construction work, which began at the end of September 2025, is expected to last until mid-December. This means that the route between Berlin and Bitterfeld will remain fully closed until the beginning of December. Travelers can also prepare for another closure next weekend in the Bitterfeld rail junction, which will lead to diversions, especially for long-distance traffic. So it's time to prepare for the new timetables early.
Investments in infrastructure
The measures are part of an extensive infrastructure program by Deutsche Bahn, which will enter a new phase in 2024. Investments totaling around 16.4 billion euros are planned here, with the aim of bringing the existing networks and train stations into shape. Over 2,000 kilometers of tracks and 2,000 switches are to be replaced, as are around 150 bridges and 1,000 train stations and stops DB.
In order to realize this ambitious project, DB InfraGO AG will also hire 5,500 new employees for maintenance and expansion measures from 2024. Among other things, modern, digital signal boxes are to be put into operation in order to make rail operations even more effective. The first general renovation of a highly polluted corridor between Frankfurt/Main and Mannheim is already on the schedule for July 2024.
For stable connections in the future
With the complete renovation and reconstruction of the tracks between Berlin and Bitterfeld, Deutsche Bahn is taking an important step towards a future-proof rail connection. Travelers can look forward to a modern, faster and, above all, safer rail journey when the construction work is completed. Until then, the message for passengers is: plan your trips well and be prepared for the diversions!
