Speeders on the L 135: 45 speed control violations!
In the past few days, the police have caused a stir in Retzau and on the motorway between Coswig and Köselitz. On October 7, 2025, a speed check took place on highway 135, which was a clear sign of the importance of the Road safety sat. A total of 342 vehicles were measured, with the maximum permitted speed being 50 km/h. Amazingly, 45 speeding violations were recorded during this inspection, and the highest speed recorded was an impressive 92 km/h.
These actions are part of an ongoing effort to increase road safety. As history shows, traffic accidents are common culprits when it comes to endangering lives and incurring high costs. In Germany, the annual costs of traffic accidents amount to over 30 billion euros, with the amount even exceeding 35 billion euros in 2022. The use of road safety programs and increased controls are just some of the measures intended to help reduce the number of accidents.
Another traffic accident
Just one day later, on the night of October 8, 2025 at around 3:30 a.m., there was a traffic accident on the highway between Coswig and Köselitz, which raises important questions about traffic safety. A 41-year-old driver of a MAN truck left the road and collided with the guardrail. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured and the vehicle remained drivable, but the total damage still came to 55,000 euros. Criminal proceedings were initiated against the driver. Such incidents illustrate how important a well-functioning traffic safety system is.
Road safety refers to a variety of aspects that seeks to prevent traffic accidents and reduce their consequences. This includes, among other things, ensuring safe traffic flows and the responsibility of road users. The fields of traffic education and research play a crucial role in this. It is up to both the legislature and traffic education to promote and evaluate these safety measures.
Responsibility of road users
Active measures such as the use of seat belts and crumple zones in vehicles, as well as consistent adherence to speed limits, are essential components of road safety. It is interesting to see that accident statistics show a decline in road deaths in Germany over several decades, indicating a positive trend. Comparing the figures from recent years, there has been a sharp decline, which underlines the efforts to improve road safety.
Although the numbers have tended to decline in recent years, the challenge remains to continue to ensure and improve road safety. In this context, road safety strategies should be continuously evaluated and adapted in order to best meet future requirements.
