Saxony-Anhalt gives more than 71 million euros to good causes!

In Saxony-Anhalt there is a remarkable commitment to good work: like that Hall indicator reported, taxpayers declared a total of 71.9 million euros as donations in their returns in 2021. This means an increase of over 12 million euros or 21.2 percent compared to the previous year. Around a fifth of the country's 772,210 taxpayers have claimed funds for charitable purposes.

The willingness to donate is particularly noticeable in Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg, where one in four taxpayers reported donations. Together, 39,044 taxpayers from these two cities donated an impressive 23.2 million euros. This corresponds to around a third of the total donations in the entire state.

The trend towards generosity

If you compare the numbers with previous years, it becomes clear that the willingness to donate in Saxony-Anhalt has steadily increased. In 2019, the reported Evangelical newspaper that almost 151,000 taxpayers had donated a total of almost 59 million euros. This represented an increase of 12 percent compared to 2018. The median amount back then was 110 euros, which compared to the 120 euros in 2021 shows that people are increasingly willing to mobilize their funds for a good cause.

However, the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district and the Burgenland district came out at the bottom in terms of willingness to donate, with only 18.8 and 18.9 percent of taxpayers making donations, respectively. In contrast, half of taxpayers in Halle donated over 150 euros.

Donation regulations

It is important to know that taxable citizens in Germany can declare up to 20 percent of their income as donations in their income tax return. Donations that cannot be fully claimed in one year can even be carried over to the following year.

The German Central Institute for Social Issues provides valuable statistics on the general development of donation volumes in Germany. The total donation volume in 2024 was 12.5 billion euros, a slight decrease compared to 2023. This once again shows how important the topic of donations remains for society, even if there are fluctuations in the overall volume.

Overall, it shows that the people in Saxony-Anhalt show their hearts and actively contribute to supporting their fellow human beings - and that is an important sign of solidarity in these times!
