Unemployment in Saxony-Anhalt is falling: Good news for young people!
The labor market situation in Saxony-Anhalt shows a positive trend, at least when you look at the numbers for October 2025. According to current statistics, unemployment figures have fallen slightly. Around 85,900 people were unemployed last month, a decrease of around 900 people compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate is 7.7 percent, a reduction of 0.1 percentage points since September. However, the rate has increased slightly compared to the previous year, when it was 7.5 percent. What particularly stands out here are young people who were able to enter the job market relatively quickly after completing their training. For older unemployed people, however, the situation remains difficult, as the regional directorate of the employment agency emphasizes.
The development in the area of long-term unemployment is also noteworthy. Compared to November 2024, 83,300 unemployed people were registered in Saxony-Anhalt, which corresponds to a decrease of 300 people and a reduction in the rate of 0.4 percentage points. What is striking is that by November 2024, around 32,500 people had been out of work for more than a year. This shows the difficulties faced by many long-term unemployed people, particularly at a time when economic conditions are changing.
Special features of the current labor market situation
Also characterized by an increased number of unemployed people with a Ukrainian background, which rose to 5,500, the question arises as to how integration measures can be further optimized. Youth unemployment also remains an issue, with 8,100 young adults now unemployed, illustrating that the challenges here remain no less demanding, despite a decline from 200 the previous month.
However, a bright spot are the 3,800 unemployed people who found new employment on the primary labor market in November. However, underemployment remains a worrying issue at 109,900 people. This shows that for many people it is necessary to further develop their qualifications in order to meet the requirements of the labor market.
Changes in unemployment insurance
An interesting aspect that could become more relevant in the coming months is the planned change to the regulations for minor jobs, which may become subject to unemployment insurance from April 1, 2024. This creates new challenges for people who are employed in this way. This significantly influences your unemployment status, which makes it advisable to find out about the new regulations early on.
An example makes this clear: If someone ends a fully insured job and starts a part-time job with the same employer a month later, they are not considered unemployed, which has consequences for their financial security. This regulation forces many people to rethink their career planning and to carefully examine the possibilities of social security protection.
The developments in the labor market in Saxony-Anhalt show both positive and challenging facets that are important for many citizens. It remains to be seen what long-term effects the current measures and regulations will have.
