50 years of mud and brine spa: Bad Sassendorf is celebrating big!
On June 28th and 29th, 2025, Bad Sassendorf will celebrate big: the mud and brine spa is celebrating its 50th anniversary! It all started in 1969 when valuable black peat was discovered in the Woeste fen, which ultimately led to official recognition as a spa in 1975. A successful development that has become a popular destination for health-conscious people in recent years. The Soester Anzeiger reports that the anniversary celebrations will take place at two different locations with multi-faceted program items.
On Saturday, June 28th, visitors will be drawn to the Woeste nature reserve. The day begins with a lecture by Alfons Meck about the history of the moor discovery and the development of the spa. Those interested can take part in a guided tour of the nature reserve from 12.30 p.m., followed by a presentation of the water buffalo and bird watching with an ornithologist. Anyone who enjoys the great outdoors has the opportunity to take part in further guided tours through this fascinating natural landscape.
A look at the program
On Sunday, June 29th, the spa park will become the stage for exciting activities. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. there will be a promotional stand in the forecourt of the Börde Therme, where there will be information about health and wellness offers. At the same time, the “Dream Trip to the Woeste” in the sea salt cave offers unique relaxation experiences. Anyone who would like to find out more about what the Wiesengrund Clinic has to offer is warmly invited between 1.30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
- 11:00-18:00 Uhr: Aktionsstand Gesundheitsangebote
- 10:00-17:45 Uhr: Traumreise in die Woeste
- 13:30-16:00 Uhr: Klinik Wiesengrund Infostand
- Ab 11:00 Uhr: Informationsstand am Gradierwerk mit Moor-Spezialitäten

To get there, there are various parking options at the Ostinghausen community center, from where you only have to walk 250 meters to the event area. In addition, a marquee at the community center will feature an exciting exhibition under the motto “The Moor Myth – The Black Gold in the Woeste” and various food trucks.
Nature and health in one
The Sauerland is known for its nature reserves. The Woeste, which is also part of the EU NATURA 2000 network, offers a variety of habitats for various animal and plant species. Not only are numerous bird species native here, but visitors can also enjoy the diverse flora and fauna. The area was once used for livestock farming, but since the peat was discovered the use has changed drastically.
The way moor mining works has changed over the years. Around 3,000 cubic meters of fen peat are removed each year for therapy production. Since great care is taken with the wetlands, small amounts of the peat can now be used for beneficial applications in the “MedyWell” therapy department. The importance of these moor spas in North Rhine-Westphalia is not only culturally important, but also health-wise. Ultimately, around a third of North Rhine-Westphalia's health resorts have the title "moor healing spa", which underlines the relevance of Bad Sassendorf Spa resorts and health resorts report that this title has only been awarded five times in the region.
The anniversary weekend in Bad Sassendorf promises not only a look back at 50 years of successful spa history, but also exciting insights into nature and its health-promoting possibilities. Be there and celebrate with us!
