Organic farmer Laame is revolutionizing agriculture in Schleibnitz!

In picturesque Schleibnitz, farmer Ansgar Laame has taken the plunge and dedicated himself to a wide range of plants on 272 hectares of land. Its range ranges from soy and chickpeas to traditional varieties such as wheat and potatoes. Laame, who founded his business in 2002, switched to organic farming in 2019 and received the coveted certificates from “Bioland” and “Naturland”.

The decision to grow organically did not come without challenges. Before making the switch, Laame farmed conventionally with wheat and sugar beet, but increasing pests led him to reduce the area. Today, a robot assists him in growing sugar beets, bringing cutting-edge technology to his traditional practices. He also has active support: two employees and 12 harvest helpers help to manage the diverse crops.

Innovations in crop production

A focus of Laame's work is research. The “Minor+” project deals with crop production in the Börde, which has suffered greatly from unfavorable weather conditions in recent years. A recent field day featured various niche crops, including blue lupins. Dr. Stephan Deike from Landberatung GmbH was impressed, but also described these plants as “a little exotic for the Börde”. The exchange and discussion about cultivation methods and care measures were lively.

The agricultural scientist Dr. Til Feike from the Julius Kühn Institute warns that the increasing frequency of unfavorable weather requires a rethink in agriculture. The yield losses during the drought years 2018 to 2020 should be seen as a wake-up call. According to Feike, more resilient cultures are particularly needed to meet the challenges.

The agriculture strategy 2035

As part of the Germany-wide arable farming strategy 2035, which was launched by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), sustainable cultivation practices are to be promoted. This strategy includes important guidelines and areas of action that aim to increase social acceptance of agriculture while at the same time taking ecological, economic and social aspects into account. For example, ensuring food quality and protecting the soil are central points of the strategy.

  • Sicherung der Qualität von Nahrungs- und Futtermitteln
  • Stärkung des Umwelt- und Ressourcenschutzes
  • Erhöhung der Kulturpflanzenvielfalt
  • Entwicklung klimaangepasster Anbaukonzepte
  • Förderung von Bildung und Beratung in der Landwirtschaft

The arable farming strategy relies on a continuous exchange of knowledge and the implementation of the latest research results in practice. Laame also benefits from these new findings through national initiatives that rely on both modern technologies and sustainable practices.

The integration of state-of-the-art machines, as required by the BMEL, ensures that fertilizers and pesticides can be used efficiently and responsibly. With a strong focus on digital technologies and a wide cultural diversity, the future is bright for Laame and agriculture in the region.

Laame's approach shows that it is entirely possible to take innovative approaches even in difficult terrain. For the future, we can only hope that its use will also find fertile ground among other farmers and contribute to the preservation of agriculture in the Börde.
