Thirty thousand euros lost: copper cable stolen from solar park!

In a disturbing incident, a massive theft of copper cables was recently committed at a solar farm near Calvörde in the Börde district. The unknown perpetrators were able to steal a total of 130 kilometers of cable, which corresponds to a weight of around nine tons. The estimated damage is around 130,000 euros, as MDR reports.

The theft took place between Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon. The perpetrators gained access to the solar park, which was still under construction, by forcibly opening a fence. They cut the connections to the cables from the inverters and the solar modules that had not yet been installed. It is believed that the thieves drove up in a larger vehicle, possibly a truck, in order to transport the significant amount of cables. The local police have secured clues and are now looking for witnesses who can provide information about the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Haldensleben police on 03904/478-0, as confirmed by the Saxony-Anhalt Police.

Insight into the crime situation

Such incidents are part of a larger problem affecting the development of crime in Germany. According to the police crime statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office, there was a decrease in crimes of 1.7% to around 5.84 million cases in 2024. Nevertheless, Statista report an increase in crimes that affect people's sense of security. Thefts, including those from construction projects such as the solar park, are particularly popular.

In a country where the most common crimes are theft and fraud, it would be naive to believe that such incidents remain isolated cases. Even though fewer crimes have been recorded in general, the pressure on the security authorities remains high, particularly with regard to property crimes, which often skyrocket.

Further incidents and developments

In addition to the theft, the police are also dealing with another incident from the region: a traffic accident that occurred on June 26, 2025 on Neuhaldensleber Straße in Haldensleben. A 12-year-old cyclist suffered minor injuries when he crossed the road and was hit by a car. The 65-year-old driver of the vehicle is now facing charges of negligent bodily harm, while the child was taken to hospital for treatment.

These events highlight the challenges facing police and the community in the region. The ongoing need to ensure both the safety of public spaces and the safety of private facilities is an ongoing task for local authorities.
