Field fire in Börde: Fire brigade fights against blazing flames!
Last Sunday things got hot in the Börde district: A major field fire broke out, which temporarily set 30 hectares of farmland and an adjacent forest ablaze. The fire brigade was on site with an impressive contingent of 90 emergency services from 12 different departments to prevent anything worse from happening. After successfully extinguishing the fire-stricken field, the fire brigade is now keeping watch to ensure that the fire does not flare up again. Part of the affected forest area, around 1.5 hectares, was allowed to burn in a controlled manner to prevent the fire from spreading uncontrollably.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear. However, it is clear that agricultural machinery was not responsible. This is particularly noteworthy, especially since the region is at medium forest fire danger level three due to the ongoing drought. In the neighboring district of Wittenberg the highest warning level is five. This means that extreme caution is required when dealing with open fire. Several grass and bush fires were reported in Wittenberg on Saturday, and local fire brigade helpers also had to go on several missions.
Causes of fire and risks
The risk of forest fires is a serious issue in Germany, and for good reason. Every year, forest fires destroy up to 500 hectares of forest; the economic damage and long recovery times for the affected natural ecosystems are significant. Especially in the current times, when drought increases the risk factors, a conscious approach to fire is essential.
The German Weather Service (DWD) offers an interactive map that provides a detailed overview of the forest fire risk in different regions. The wildfire danger levels break the risk into five categories, from very low danger to extremely high danger, where even walking and staying in affected areas is severely restricted. Additional protective measures must be taken in levels four and five to prevent fires.
More fire brigade operations in the region
On Sunday the fire brigade was not only required in the Börde district. There was also alarming news in the Meinsdorf district of Dessau: a forest area of around 4,000 square meters burned here. Unfortunately, a firefighter was slightly injured by smoke fumes during operations and had to be treated on an outpatient basis.
The dangerous sources of fire cannot only lurk in fields and forests. In Zahna, for example, the flames even spread to the roof of an uninhabited house after fire broke out in around 100 square meters of wasteland. Firefighters were also deployed in several places near Klitzschena and along federal highway 182 to prevent anything worse from happening. Such fires are often caused by human error, such as discarded cigarettes or broken glass.
With such drastic developments in fire events, it becomes clear once again how important preventative measures and responsible handling of fire in nature are. At the moment we can only hope that the fire brigade's operations continue to be successful and that the fire does not spread uncontrollably again.
For all those who enjoy being outdoors, forest fire danger levels should be taken seriously and everyone should be aware of their responsibilities in order to avoid such devastating situations.
