A highlight is the family tour on October 22nd at 4 p.m., which will be led by none other than the castle ghost Eleonore von Schockenstein. Particularly fitting for Halloween, the museum will remain open on October 31st from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors in costumes can visit the exhibition free of charge on this day, although donations are warmly welcomed. The world of garages is diverse and extends far beyond simply parking cars. Garages are often central elements of the cityscape, especially in cities like Chemnitz. A study by Chemnitz 2025 shows that there are an estimated 30,000 garages in Chemnitz, most of which are 3 m × 6 m in size and often made of concrete slabs or corrugated iron. These small buildings offer space for creative ideas, leisure activities and social gatherings - whether these are barbecue evenings with friends or working on new projects.

In many Eastern European countries, garages have been built in collective housing complexes and are places of meeting and private retreat. Garage yards have therefore established themselves as important social hubs. This is also where the idea of ISGV developed further to see garages as multifunctional spaces that are much more than just parking spaces for vehicles. In a research project, the ISGV college examined the cultural, historical and media perceptions of garages and explored their potential for future uses in times of resource scarcity.

In addition, the exhibition "Garages | Stories. Explorations of an everyday place", which runs from September 2024 to March 2025 at the Museum of Thuringian Folklore in Erfurt, has underlined the cultural relevance of garages. In particular, the focus here is on the creative work that can arise in such spaces. Events such as readings – for example with Lutz Seiler, an author with a strong connection to Central Germany – further strengthen interest in this cultural practice.

The exhibition in the castle during the spooky season is an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in the cultural and historical significance of the garages and discover the different facets associated with these small, often inconspicuous spaces. Stop by and experience the spooky and creative side of garage culture!
