Garbage cans and construction equipment on fire – police are looking for witnesses!

On the night of July 14, 2025, there were once again worrying fire incidents in Oebisfelde. Like the Börde police station reported, dumpster fires were reported at several locations in the city. The first alarm was raised at 12:36 a.m. and reports of fire came from, among other places, the vicinity of the train station. Despite the search measures initiated immediately, the search for the perpetrators has so far been unsuccessful.

The investigation into arson and damage to property is already in full swing. The Haldensleben police are asking the public for help and calling on witnesses to call 03904/478-0.

Damage caused by arson is increasing

In parallel to the garbage can fires, another worrying event in the district was also documented. In Colbitz, on July 13, 2025, at 1:25 p.m., a wheel loader was set on fire at a construction site, causing property damage of around 25,000 euros. In this case too, the police are investigating arson and are calling on witnesses to come forward.

Another serious case occurred on the same day in Burgstall, where a warehouse was completely on fire at around 6:29 p.m. When the fire brigade arrived, the hall was in a critical condition as it contained 1,700 blocks of hay and 500 blocks of straw. Due to the circumstances, the emergency services decided to carry out a controlled burning. The material damage here is estimated at around 200,000 euros, and the cause of the fire is currently unclear.

The dangers of arson

Arson is not a rare phenomenon in the region. On the night of December 14, 2015, four garbage cans at the historic Oebisfelde Castle were set on fire, causing the flames to rise and almost set the roof structure on fire. This explosive situation was only discovered the morning after, when the melted barrels and the sooty wall became visible. Innovative fire prevention measures are therefore required more than ever.

Like the information page of the Institute for Loss Prevention shows, there are many different causes of fires. Education and prevention should be a higher priority to prevent such frightening incidents in the future.

Although the dumpster fires fortunately do not involve any greater property damage than those caused elsewhere, it turns out that an uneasy feeling remains. The hope is that the investigation will quickly reach a conclusion and the perpetrators will be held accountable. In the meantime, the police are continuing to search for eyewitnesses and are relying on the public's help.
