Winter service in the Börde: 595 kilometers ready for snow and ice!

When the temperatures drop and the first snow falls, the winter services are in the starting blocks. Preparations are already in full swing in the Börde district. As the Börde district reports, the Office for Road Construction and Maintenance has taken all necessary measures for the coming winter months. The 595 kilometers of district roads are organized into a total of twelve tours, which are managed from the two locations Haldensleben and Oschersleben.

A considerable arsenal is available: 1,700 tons of salt and almost 60 tons of brine are in stock to clear the streets of snow and ice. For an average tour of around 50 kilometers, with the shortest being 45 kilometers and the longest being 55 kilometers, the winter service guarantees that the spreading is completed by 7 a.m. at the latest. Those responsible know that heavy snowfall can pose challenges and appeal to road users to drive particularly carefully in wintry conditions.

Preparation and operating times

The working hours are precisely regulated: Monday to Friday, the crews work in two shifts from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. On the weekends, operations start a little earlier, with work starting at 4:00 a.m. on Saturdays and 5:00 a.m. on Sundays. In the current operations since then, an average of 40,000 kilometers of gritting was necessary per winter, which highlights the importance of well-organized logistics.

Financial resources are also well calculated. Winter service costs the district around 400,000 euros annually. In winter 2024/2025, total expenditure was slightly below the previous year, with 107,000 euros for services and 128,000 euros for material costs.

Costs and responsibilities

As part of these developments, the responsibility of the property owners is also pointed out. Winter service is not only a duty for public roads, but also for private property owners who are responsible for snow and ice. Anyone who decides to use professional winter service should be aware of the costs. These vary significantly depending on the region and type of services. The Janitorial services state that costs for manual snow removal are between 2 and 6 euros per square meter in rural areas and between 6 and 9 euros in cities.

In larger residential complexes and commercial areas, the clearance is often outsourced to external service providers, while the providers offer a wide variety of billing models: from per use to flat monthly or seasonal prices. Insurance in particular plays a central role in legally protecting owners.

Preparations for the winter are in full swing, both among the district's organizational units and among private service providers. The coming months will show how well everyone involved has adapted to the winter challenges.
