Car frate on playground: Senior dies after crash against tower!
In a tragic incident in the community on the Finn in the Burgenland district, on July 2, 2025 there was a fatal accident, in which a 72-year-old man hit his car against a climbing tower on a playground. Fortunately, there were no children on the playground, which the misfortune, if not in its scope, at least mitigated something. The senior was found in a critical condition when the rescue workers arrived and died a little later. Initial investigations suggest that a health problem may have been the cause of the accident. His 53-year-old passenger suffered a shock and also had to be medical care. [Volksstimme] reports that the incident happened in the afternoon and the exact circumstances are still unclear.
A similar misfortune only recently occurred in Heidelberg, where a 39-year-old father was killed by a falling branch of a Roßkastanie on a playground in Handschuhshersheim. A sunny day developed into a catastrophe at a moment when the branch hit him in the chest area. The police have already started investigations, and residents suspect that the drought could have played a role in the fall of the branch. Despite regular tree work in the area, the city and the GGH residential complex have taken extensive measures for security after the incident, including checking all trees. The playground was opened again after a temporary closure, but remains only accessible to residents. [Heidelberg24] has documented the reactions of the GGH that sent letters to the residents to determine the need for discussion.
The security situation in playgrounds
These tragic incidents throw a light on the security situation on playgrounds and the frequent accident risks with which children are confronted. According to a specialist information about accident statistics, it is alarming to know that accident injuries are one of the greatest health risks for children and adolescents in Germany. For children from one year, accidents are even the most common cause of death. Around 16.5 % of children from 1 to 17 years of age are looking for medical help every year - a worrying value. [Kindersicherheit.de] indicates that most accidents at home or in the private environment (43.8 %) happen, followed by schools and care facilities (24.2 %) as well as at playgrounds or in sports facilities (17.4 %).
In 2021, around 11.5 million children under the age of 15 lived in Germany, with over 167,000 of them had to be treated in the hospital inpatient after suffering an accident. In the same year, 163 children under the age of 15 died tragically from the consequences of accidents, including 22 infants under one year. These figures illustrate how important it is to optimize safety precautions in playgrounds and to ensure regular control.
The recent events in An der Finn and Heidelberg shake us awake and make us aware that security should be a priority in a playground. This is the only way we can get the joy of playing and romping for our children without exposing them unnecessary dangers.
