Commemoration of femicide victims: Weißenfels calls for an end to the violence!
It was a moving day in Weißenfels when around 100 people gathered in front of St. Mary's Church to commemorate 47-year-old Laura, who was cruelly doused with flammable liquid and set on fire by her partner two weeks ago. This terrible act is not an isolated incident. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, a woman in Germany becomes a victim of domestic violence every two minutes. There is a death almost every day.
The memorial event, organized by the women's shelter and equal opportunities officer, looks beyond this terrible incident and addresses a much deeper problem. There are alarming reports of similar acts of violence surrounding the incident in Weißenfels, such as the recent case in Leipzig, where a woman was stabbed by her partner - her son survived seriously injured. This clearly shows that something has to change.
Recognize and act on violence
An essential step in the fight against this form of violence is to recognize the signs early. Excessive jealousy, control over social contacts or constant surveillance - these are clear warning signs. Domestic violence often begins slowly, not with physical violence, and can quickly escalate to the point where women are in acute danger.
Attentive neighbors and friends play a crucial role in supporting those affected. “We have to be more careful,” emphasizes B.D. from the equal opportunities officer of the Burgenland district. “Counseling services must be promoted and signs of violence must be recognized.” Support from the social environment is essential because many women talk to people they trust about their experiences. These conversations are often the first step to getting help.
The “Violence against Women” helpline on 116 016 is available around the clock and offers affected women the opportunity to seek help anonymously. There are also numerous contact points available in Weißenfels: The women's shelters in Weißenfels and Zeitz are important places where women and children can find protection from violence. There are also advice centers that offer support in developing options for action and security concepts.
Domestic violence in context
Statistics show that in 2023 around 181,000 of the approximately 256,000 victims of domestic violence in Germany were female. However, the number of unreported cases is high because many cases are not reported due to shame and guilt. The willingness to report is often low, which is a serious problem when dealing with domestic violence.
It is clear that the population needs to be made aware of this problem. Prevention work is crucial to counteract domestic violence. Early intervention and setting boundaries can prevent escalations in violent relationships. However, this also requires strong social support and resources, both for the women affected and for the perpetrators, in order to shed light on the background to violence.
The regular meetings of the working group “Violence in Close Social Relationships and Stalking in the Burgenland District” deal intensively with the topics of digital violence and work with perpetrators. At the last meeting, Laura was remembered with a minute's silence, which reflected the sadness and concern among the population.
The situation is clear: it is up to all of us to have a good hand and look out for each other. Violence against women must not remain a taboo topic, and everyone can be part of the change. Be it through attentive neighborhood help or through the use and promotion of advisory services – together we can make a difference.
If you or someone you know needs support, don't hesitate to seek help. The advice centers and women's shelters in Burgenlandkreis are just a phone call away and are ready to provide urgently needed support.
