Serious traffic accident in Mertendorf: young people injured!

A serious traffic accident shook the quiet community of Mertendorf in the Burgenland district on Wednesday afternoon. A collision occurred on the L200 between Löbitz and Pauscha when the driver of a van collided with two mopeds while overtaking. Two young moped riders fell. While the 15-year-old was only slightly injured, the 16-year-old sustained serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital. Fortunately, another minor pillion passenger was uninjured. This dramatic scene was made by the [police Saxony-Anhalt](https://polizei.sachsen-anhalt.de/das-sind-wir/presse/pi-halle-saale/burgenlandkreis?tx_tsarssinclude_pi1%5Bactio n%5D=single&tx_tsarssinclude_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=Base&tx_tsarssinclude_pi1%5Buid%5D=606027&cHash=0bddc54df5398ca6b498280895337bb7) to create an investigation into the cause of the accident.

What exactly happened? The police emphasize that the investigation at the scene of the accident is aimed at determining criminal conduct. Most traffic accidents are not criminally relevant, but the police still have to clarify whether the public prosecutor's office or the fine authorities need to intervene. The police investigation is essential in order to be able to clarify the relevant claims later in the event of damage.

Further incidents in the region

But it wasn't just the traffic that made headlines. On the night of Wednesday to Thursday, an attempted break-in was reported in an empty single-family home in Hohenmölsen OT Granschütz. Witnesses heard sawing noises and alerted the police. The officers were able to arrest two suspects, aged 39 and 40, in the building. During the search they also found illegal narcotics. The public prosecutor's office filed an application for arrest against the 40-year-old, which will now be examined by a judge on Friday. The amount of damage remains unknown as the investigation continues.

There was no peace on the roads either: an accident involving wildlife occurred on Thursday morning on the L190 between Osterfeld and Goldschau, where a bus hit a deer. In addition to the loss of the wild animal, there was material damage to the bus.

Regulations and statistics on traffic accidents

The situation in road traffic is also a hotly debated topic on a larger scale. In 2024 there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany. Despite a decrease compared to last year, personal injury accidents are still at alarming levels. Minor road users are particularly at risk, and the most common causes of accidents are insufficient distance and inadequate speed. According to Statista, human errors such as inattention and recklessness will remain the main cause of road traffic accidents in 2024.

“Vision Zero” was launched to eliminate traffic deaths by 2050. For this purpose, better infrastructure and increased awareness among road users are essential. But as current incidents in Mertendorf show, there is an urgent need for action.

The police will continue to make every effort to improve statistics and increase safety on the streets. It remains to be hoped that the tragic accident not only affects the families affected, but also serves as a bittersweet reminder for other road users.
