Chaos in regional transport: Over 1,800 train cancellations in Saxony-Anhalt!

The situation in rail transport in Saxony-Anhalt is currently anything but rosy. Regional transport Start Germany has been serving the diesel train network in the region since the end of December 2024, but is facing massive challenges. An acute shortage of staff has led to frequent train cancellations, disrupting the travel plans of many passengers. Over 1,800 trips were canceled between April and early September 2025, meaning more than 200 weekly cancellations during peak season. Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens describes the situation as “very critical” and calls on passengers to be patient while the company works to get the problems under control. Start Deutschland plans to fill vacancies by the end of September and at the same time implement improvements to passenger information. However, restrictions on train traffic are currently unavoidable, especially on the 16 diesel-powered regional routes in Saxony-Anhalt. This comes from a report by MDR out.

It's not just customers who have to deal with the inconvenience - regional partners are also on alert. The state-owned local transport company Saxony-Anhalt (NASA) has already issued a contractual complaint to Start Deutschland. Poor staff planning, a lack of replacement vehicles and inadequate information for passengers are criticized. “We have a good knack for purchasing additional cars, but we also have to ensure that the trains run,” demands Hüskens. After discussions with the management of Start Deutschland and DB Regio, improvements are in sight; a crisis meeting was scheduled. As part of this, contracts with temporary staff should also be reactivated in order to stabilize operations as quickly as possible.

Demand and supply in rail transport

The demand for local rail passenger transport is becoming increasingly urgent in line with the record figures that have been in place for over 30 years. Loud Dubist Hall The Deutschlandticket has also ensured that the number of passengers is constantly increasing and that an adjustment of capacities is urgently necessary. New offers that are intended to meet the increased requirements are particularly highlighted, such as the half-hourly connection “Altmärker Y” between Magdeburg and Stendal. Transport policy also seems to want to respond to the increased demand, but the current difficulties cannot be overlooked. Minister Hüskens emphasizes that the quality improvements are incomparably important: “Everything must be done to regain the trust of passengers.”

Although rented used trains are already in use, the catastrophic condition of the infrastructure represents a major hurdle. In some regions, slow speeds and unmanned signal boxes make it even more uncomfortable for travelers. The developments are driving customers to switch to bus services, which can only worsen the already tense situation in rail transport.

  • Vor allem touristische Strecken im Harz.

The contractual pressure on transport companies should also not be underestimated; Reclaims of 41 million euros were already announced last year. For 2023 it could even be 56 million euros. N TV reports that the situation is becoming extremely precarious not only for passengers, but also for existing companies.

The hope lies in better times, which could perhaps arrive as early as October 2025. Until then, passengers only have one thing left: a little patience and, if necessary, checking the bus timetable.
