Relegation thriller for Dessau: replay against Essen decides everything!
The handball two-league is characterized by unwanted chaos and sporting decisions that could have far-reaching consequences. Dessau-Roßlauer HV (DRHV), which celebrated relegation last season, is now faced with an unexpected challenge. There is a replay against TuSEM Essen and the pressure on the team is enormous.
The replay became necessary because Dessau played with one man too many on the field during a crucial game on April 27th. Although the DRHV initially won the game 28:27, TuSEM Essen lodged a protest. This was initially rejected, but a ruling by the Federal Court on June 12th meant that the game now has to be repeated. “It's not just a question of sporting competition, but also of fairness,” commented managing director Sebastian Glock, who also expressed concerns about the health of his players, who have not trained since the last game of the season. The preparations for the decisive game on Sunday couldn't be more complicated - players had to be brought back from vacation and the coaching position has not yet been clarified.
A bitter turn for Dessau
The final weeks of the DRHV were marked by rescue celebrations and farewells. On June 8th, coach Uwe Jungandreas was farewelled with an emotional choreography after he had looked after the team for over ten years. Five players were also said farewell and the club ended the difficult season with the belief that they would stay in the league. But just three days later came the bitter news that there would have to be a replay - and that could mean relegation.
“After a win in Essen, we might even get access to the DHB Cup, but that now depends entirely on us,” says the TuSEM aggressively. A success in the game could allow Essen to move up to ninth place. In contrast, Dessau is under pressure: if they lose, the club would be relegated to the third division. And while the discussions surrounding the replay and the associated uncertainties also concern sporting events, the possibility that Bayer Dormagen could be saved by a defeat in Dessau is becoming increasingly likely.
An unequal competition?
The discussion surrounding the sports court decision also influenced the management levels. “We are working on optimizing the basic regulations,” explains HBL boss Frank Bohmann, while at the same time saying that the clubs themselves are responsible for delays. Critics accuse Bohmann that his statement does not do justice to the players who had already booked vacations. Many of them are now caught in an unpleasant dilemma in which sporting and personal plans unintentionally intersect.
It remains to be seen how the replay on the weekend will turn out. While the focus is on the playful aspect, those responsible also have to deal with the traumatic effects on the players and the club in general. The DRHV is fighting for more than just points - it's about survival in the league.
