Festive beer for the Bauhaus anniversary: Cheers to 100 years of Dessau!
In Dessau-Roßlau the countdown to a very special anniversary is upon us: the Bauhaus is celebrating 100 years of its fascinating history. The Monopol Magazine reports that the celebrations will not only be accompanied by exhibitions and conferences, but also by a very special festival beer. This anniversary beer will be served on September 4th and will even be brewed in the Zum Alten Dessauer brewery. A first batch of 40 hectoliters is waiting to enrich the celebrations.
The beer recipe is based on ingredients that were used at the time of the Bauhaus settlement in Dessau. A connection between the past and the present is created with three selected barley malts, which symbolize the years 1925, 1996 and 2025. The beer also combines classic and modern hop varieties from Germany, New Zealand and the USA - what more could you want for a proper celebration?
A masterpiece of architecture
The history of the Bauhaus began in 1919 when it was founded in Weimar, and in 1925 it moved to Dessau, where it experienced its heyday. In 1926, the students and masters moved into the newly constructed Bauhaus building, which was designed by Walter Gropius and is considered a manifesto of the Bauhaus ideas. Today, this architectural masterpiece attracts not only tourists, but also students and design experts. It offers tours of the impressive rooms, which showcase many of the then revolutionary design ideas. The Bauhaus building is not a museum, but is open to visitors.
In the immediate vicinity are the masters' houses, also designed by Gropius. These buildings provide insights into the lives of the Bauhaus artists and are part of the rich heritage that emerged from the Bauhaus's brief but intense presence in Dessau. In total, the Bauhaus left behind around 300 buildings in the region that are unique in their architecture and design.
World heritage and cultural significance
The Bauhaus school, which existed until 1933, not only revolutionized architecture, but also significantly influenced the aesthetic concepts of modernism. Important professors such as Walter Gropius and Wassily Kandinsky contributed to the development and made the Bauhaus the center of new ideas. The Bauhaus sites in Weimar, Dessau and Bernau are now considered key works of European modern art, as UNESCO underlines. The entry in the UNESCO World Heritage List ensures the preservation and protection of these historical monuments and is a symbol of the international importance of the Bauhaus.
The planned anniversary celebrations under the motto “To the substance” promise a rich program. In addition to the festival beer, various events are planned, including exhibitions, an artistic program and festivities, which will continue with additional exhibitions in March 2026. A Bauhaus festival in September 2025 will properly celebrate the big anniversary.
There is great anticipation for the celebrations, not only for the city of Dessau, but for everyone who would like to experience the development and influence of the Bauhaus up close. A visit to the Bauhaus building and the masters' houses could be a very special opportunity to discover the roots and passion for modern design.
