In a ceremonial ceremony today in the Dessau-Roßlau city library, funding totaling 40,000 euros was handed over for the 2026 State Literature Days. Culture Minister Rainer Robra (CDU) presented the grant notice to Mayor Robert Reck, who underlined the importance of the event for the Bauhaus anniversary. The State Literature Days will take place from May 7th to 23rd, 2026 and have the motto: “... finds city!”.
What exactly are the State Literature Days? These events have their origins in Dessau and have been held annually since 1992 at different locations with different themes. The aim is to bring contemporary literature closer to a broad audience and to create a space for discussions about urban visions of the future and the culture of remembrance. MZ.de reports that over 80 authors have already applied to take part in the reading festival.
An extensive program
What will the program look like? Readers can look forward to a colorful mix of readings in libraries, schools and senior citizen facilities. Book presentations, discussions and special evening events on genres such as crime fiction and poetry are also planned. The goal is to bring readers, writers and those interested in literature together and to promote exchange.
The State Literature Days are not only a highlight for local literature lovers, they are also realized with a wide range of diverse partners and locations in Saxony-Anhalt. Culture Saxony-Anhalt highlights that numerous schools, libraries and museums will take part in the program each year. Authors from different federal states and abroad are also invited.
What's ahead?
For everyone who is also interested in future literature days, there is already an outlook for the coming years. In 2025, the State Literature Days in Magdeburg will take place under the motto “Limits.Los.Reading”. Literature LSA informs us that this event will be a very special event on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Magdeburg City Library.
With a wide range of offerings that push the boundaries between literary genres, art forms and cultures, there is something for every audience. Readers who are interested in the State Literature Days 2027 can apply to host it until September 1, 2025, with support being offered by the Friedrich-Bödecker-Kreis in Saxony-Anhalt.
