Drug raid in the Harz: Illegal cannabis plantation uncovered!

In the region around Bad Harzburg and Saxony-Anhalt, the authorities are currently under pressure after several illegal cannabis plantations were recently uncovered. The case, which began in Bad Harzburg at the beginning of the year, is now spreading and showing the extent of a regional drug trade.

At the end of March 2025, an elaborate cannabis plantation was discovered in Bad Harzburg, where the police seized around 900 plants ready for harvest. The investigators had originally expected up to 1,200 plants. This action led to an extensive investigation, during which a 21-year-old suspect was arrested for whom there was an arrest warrant. He is seen as the suspected organizer of a gang that is active in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. His tasks included equipping the plantation, recruiting staff and selling drugs itself, as NDR reports.

Investigations and arrests

The investigation into the Bad Harzburg case soon revealed clues that led to further cannabis plantations. In the Magdeburg area, several searches were carried out in Wolmirstedt and near Dessau, where a plantation that had already been harvested was discovered. Possible quantities of cannabis were stored in a hall in Wolmirstedt, the exact amount of which remains unknown. A 21-year-old man was arrested in Magdeburg and is now in custody. The investigations against him are clearly based on the findings from the Bad Harzburg proceedings, as Goslarische Zeitung summarizes.

The arrest of the suspect shows the strict measures taken by the police as they work to investigate and combat drug trafficking in the region. Special forces searched several locations in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia and arrested a total of six suspects who confessed and received suspended sentences.

Expanding the investigation

The consequences of the Bad Harzburg case lead to further proceedings against the alleged operators of the cannabis plantations. Further analysis of the evidence could reveal more information and possibly more arrests. The first steps have already led to a wave of discoveries in the region. A cannabis plantation with over 2,000 plants was recently found in Schüttorf, which shows how complex and extensive the problem is in the region, as the Emsland/County of Bentheim police station reports. Two men were temporarily arrested, with the 33-year-old now in custody while the 38-year-old was released on probation.

The fact is that investigators are consistently on the hunt for the entire network behind these illegal activities. The results of the ongoing proceedings could also have a significant impact on the drug trade in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, as more and more connections between the various plantations and suspects are being uncovered. The cooperation between the different police departments and the customs authority shows that they want to tackle the problem together.

Security authorities are determined to put a stop to drug trafficking in the region and, it appears, have a strong hand in bringing those responsible to justice. These developments remain exciting in any case; they will probably not be the last revelations in connection with cannabis plantations.
