Dozens of police helicopters over Saxony-Anhalt: exercise causes a stir!

A majestic spectacle in the sky over Saxony-Anhalt: On Thursday, September 25, 2025, up to 13 police helicopters will fly in a well-organized formation over the south of the state. This impressive aerial route is part of a nationwide exercise by the Federal Police Aviation Group, which is currently in full swing. Loud MDR The route of the helicopters will run from Bautzen in Saxony to Kassel-Calden in Hesse.

During the flights, the helicopters pass through the Saale district and the Mansfeld-Südharz district, among other places. In practice, this means that the population in these regions will witness an impressive flying event - provided the weather cooperates. It should be noted that changes to the route due to weather are possible, but as a rule the helicopters stick to the direct connection.

A course of flying lessons

The exercise began on Monday in Sankt Augustin near Bonn and will last until Friday. A total of 13 helicopters from eight federal states are taking part in this training measure. There are also 17 police and federal police officers on board the aircraft who are currently training to become professional helicopter pilots. That reports WDR.

In Hamburg they completed their first flight towards their training city early in the morning and will spend a whole week practicing flying in a group with other pilots. Not only is flying trained in a group, but various police missions are also rehearsed from the air. This comprehensive training is part of a curriculum that lasts approximately 22 months and began for those involved in fall 2023.

A significant role from the air

The Federal Police Aviation Group plays a central role within Germany: it not only supports the federal and state authorities, but also international organizations such as FRONTEX. With a fleet of 93 helicopters, this group is one of the largest operators of civil aircraft in Germany after Lufthansa. The flying group is also one of the largest police air service organizations in the world, which underlines its importance and the need for well-trained pilots.

This exercise is not only an opportunity to gain practical experience, but also an excellent example of networking between different federal states in the field of police aviation. This week it becomes clear how important it is to train prospective police helicopter pilots in order to be able to cope with the diverse challenges of the police service.
