E-bike thefts in Saxony-Anhalt continue to rise: police warn!

In Saxony-Anhalt, thieves have recently been particularly keen on electric bikes. Figures from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) show that e-bike thefts remain at a high level. In 2023 there were impressive ones 1,045 e-bikes stolen, causing estimated damage of almost2.8 million eurosresulted. For comparison: in 2022 the number was810 theftsand a loss of approx2.3 million euros. There also appears to be a slight increase in the number of cases this year, 2025, but the clearance rate remains soberingly low10 percent. E-bikes are attractive to criminals - but what can you do to protect your own bike?

“A good lock makes the difference,” recommends the police. Suggested security methods include solid steel chain, U-lock or armored cable locks. In addition, the bicycles should be locked to firmly anchored objects such as lamp posts so that thieves do not have easy prey. The LKA also recommends individual labeling of e-bikes through engraving on the frame. Such a measure could significantly increase retrieval if the bikes were stolen despite all precautionary measures.

Insurance as a protective measure

Anyone who invests in a high-quality e-bike should also think about appropriate insurance. Numerous reports - for example from the GDV – point out that compensation in the event of theft is often higher than with classic household contents insurance. Bicycle or e-bike insurance offers more comprehensive protection against various risks, including vandalism and damage. Ultimately, such policies can make all the difference when it comes to replacing the new value of a stolen bike.

The steadily increasing numbers of e-bike thefts are not just a local phenomenon. The increase since 2021 is clearly visible - and with over 2,000 thefts in the last two years, it is clear that the authorities need to seriously address the issue. The police measures and prevention offers could make a decisive contribution to the safety of cyclists.

So it remains a challenge to arm yourself against the increasing number of thefts. This makes preventive measures and the right insurance all the more important. If e-bikes continue to be so popular in the region, how to use them will always remain an issue that affects not only cyclists, but also all road users. Here it becomes clear that a good hand in choosing the lock and possibly the insurance can be crucial - so that the fun of driving is not quickly spoiled again.
