Gladigau: Low German village theater delights thousands of visitors!
Gladigau, a charming village in Saxony-Anhalt with around 300 inhabitants, is known not only for its picturesque half-timbered houses and well-kept front gardens, but also for its vibrant cultural heritage. The Romanesque church that characterizes the village is particularly striking. Low German theater is flourishing here in Gladigau and has earned an excellent reputation over the years. Every year, thousands of spectators from cities like Munich and Rostock flock to the village to experience the productions of the unique ensemble, which consists entirely of amateur actors - all of whom are residents of Gladigau. About the village theater WDR reported and stated that it is now recognized as an intangible cultural heritage.
The theater has made it its mission to artistically cultivate Altmärker Platt, a variant of Low German. In recent years, interest in this special language, which has been spoken in the region for several hundred years, has increased. The research project “Low German in Saxony-Anhalt” (NiSA) examines both structural and cultural characteristics of the Altmärker Platt and lets Gladigau act as one of six reference locations. Osterburg emphasizes that the project aims to strengthen the awareness and dissemination of this linguistic diversity.

Low German in focus
The importance of Low German can be felt throughout Saxony-Anhalt. It is a language of its own that is not only vital for the local culture, but is also politically supported. The signing of the “European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages” shows that we want to actively promote linguistic diversity. Culture Saxony-Anhalt highlights that measures are being taken to make Low German visible and accessible to the younger generation. There are numerous initiatives to introduce children to Low German in schools, for example through the “Middle Elbish Dictionary” or the “Plattdütschbüdel”, which offers a wide range of play and learning materials.
In Gladigau they not only perform theater but also work with great commitment to keep the Low German language alive. In this way, the village image of Gladigau remains culturally unique and at the same time attracts curiosity from outside. A place where the roots of the region remain alive through tradition and commitment.
