Big cat spotted at Geiseltalsee: Authorities sound the alarm!

In the region around Braunsbedra, Saxony-Anhalt, a big cat is causing a stir and making the residents feel uneasy. On Friday evening, the animal was spotted in the area of the harbor at Geiseltalsee, one of the largest artificial lakes in Germany. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Control immediately issued a warning calling on the population to exercise caution. This alarm message was also distributed via the NINA warning app. Accordingly, people should not approach the animal and avoid meadows and forests in order to avoid possible conflicts the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported.

As the Saale district's head of public order, Sabine Faulstich, explained, this is a serious situation: "It's not a fake." According to credible sources, the suspected predator was spotted near the marina. Experts have also confirmed that a big cat could actually be out in the wild, although the exact species currently remains unclear. Some guesses point to a cougar. Another eyewitness video circulating on social media shows the animal and was deemed authentic, as was by the Wetterauer Zeitung reported.

High security precautions

In order to defuse the situation, the police are entrusted with large-scale surveillance of the area. A helicopter is also used to keep an eye on the animal as best as possible. If there are further sightings, residents are asked to inform the fire and rescue service control center on the emergency number 112. This incident is reminiscent of a similar sighting of a predator two years ago in Kleinmachnow near Berlin, which ultimately turned out to be a wild boar, which fuels the excitement all the more.

The Geiseltal is known as a former brown coal open-cast mine, which is now flooded and offers numerous leisure opportunities. Despite its popularity, the current situation is anything but pleasant for visitors and residents. It is now clear at the latest: There is a lot going on and everyone should take the authorities' advice seriously in order to find safety in the forests and meadows around Braunsbedra, added the Mercury.
