Drama at the Innerste Dam: 40-year-old missing while swimming!

A tragic incident occurred in the Innerste Dam in the Goslar district on Sunday, June 23, 2025, in which a 40-year-old swimmer disappeared. Loud NDR This happened while bathing when the man drowned in front of his wife. Despite intensive search efforts, the man initially remained untraceable. The search was launched on Sunday using various means such as boats, drones and divers, but had to be called off due to darkness in the evening.

The local fire department was alerted at 4:37 p.m. after it was noticed that a person was missing while swimming. Emergency services from the Altenau fire department rushed to the scene of the accident with an equipment truck, an emergency boat and a diver Regional today reported. In total, the divers from the Clausthal-Zellerfeld water rescue specialist group carried out several dives. However, the underwater conditions were difficult: limited visibility, old tree roots and uneven ground made the search significantly more difficult.

The challenges of searching

In addition to the underwater search, a surface search was also carried out using three boats. The Liebenburg fire department also successfully used a drone to take aerial photos and thus coordinate the search more effectively. But despite all their efforts, the emergency services were unsuccessful. The fire department later handed the site over to the police, who planned the search for the next day, possibly with sonar support.

The police assume a fatal swimming accident and suspect that the man drowned. Given the latest statistics from the German Life Saving Society (DLRG), this is not an isolated case. In 2023, 411 fatal accidents have already been registered in German waters, an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. It is the third consecutive increase in drownings since 2019, which has prompted the DLRG to intensify its educational work, especially for parents of young children, to make them aware of the dangers in the water.

The tragic events surrounding the Innerste Dam show once again the need for precautionary measures and increased awareness among bathers, especially in the summer months. There is still hope that clarity can be provided when the search continues on Monday.
