Dangerous hikes in the Harz Mountains: Mountain rescue teams in constant use!

The Harz is once again a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers in summer. Every year the region attracts thousands of visitors who enjoy the picturesque landscapes. But where there is light, there is also shadow: the mountain rescue service has already had to go on numerous missions this year. In the first six months of 2023 there were a total of 44 missions, as news38.de reported. The group in Wernigerode accounted for 27 missions, while 17 came from Thale. Statistics also show that the mountain rescue service is active on average more than once a week.

Of particular concern are the accidents that occur during hikes. A mountain bike rider without a protective helmet who had an accident on the Gelber Brink mountain pass in June made the headlines because he died after a serious fall. Another serious incident occurred at Großer Feuerstein, where a climber survived a fall of around ten meters but had to be rescued with serious injuries.

The challenges of the mountain rescue service

Matthias Kirmann, spokesman for the Harz Mountain Rescue Service, comments on the situation and emphasizes that many hikers are well equipped. But there are also spontaneous excursionists who often do not set out into nature sufficiently prepared. An example are hikers who want to climb to the summit of the Brocken in sneakers and without suitable clothing. Kirmann criticizes this carelessness, especially with regard to the unpredictable weather, which represents a real challenge for hikers in the Harz Mountains.

The tendency towards accidents among children is particularly alarming. One incident occurred when a caregiver with six children got lost and had to be rescued from a ravine at night. Such events make it clear how important it is to educate even the youngest members of the group about safety precautions.

Statistics and Harz adventure world

The mountain rescue service is the northernmost mountain rescue service in Germany and belongs to the German Red Cross. Around 120 people are active in Saxony-Anhalt, 46 of whom work full-time. The youth group, which helps recruit young talent, currently has twelve members. This community is essential in order to continue to be well prepared for the diverse demands placed on mountain rescuers in the future.

The usage numbers speak for themselves. In 2024 there were around 140 missions, as mz.de reports. Most emergencies occurred in the summer months. The rescuers provide help with a wide range of injuries, from broken ankles to cardiac arrest. A tragic case occurred at the Hexentanzplatz in Thale, where a 17-year-old had to be rescued dead after falling about 50 meters down.

The mountain rescue service is increasingly relying on air support because the difficult terrain poses a challenge for rescue operations. The mountain rescue service also receives support from police helicopters, which are requested for air rescue operations. The practical training also focuses on emergency medicine and nature conservation.

In order to minimize the number of future accidents, the mountain rescue service gives valuable tips on how to avoid accidents: sturdy shoes, enough water, provisions and a well-equipped first aid kit are part of the basic equipment. Kirmann also advises finding out about the weather conditions before going on a trip and having a fully charged cell phone with you so that you can get help quickly in an emergency.

The next hike in the Harz? Prepare yourself well so that the view of beautiful nature is not spoiled by avoidable accidents. Because as the saying goes? “With the right plan, the trip will be a pleasure!”
