Harz in turmoil: Automotive supplier Bohai Trimet files for bankruptcy!
The economic challenges in the Harz are coming to a head, and the news of the bankruptcy of a major company is causing great excitement in the region. The Bohai Trimet Automotive Holding GmbH, a major supplier to the automotive industry, has filed for bankruptcy. The Halle District Court has already officially opened the proceedings, and all four of the company's companies are affected. This step has hit the people of the Harz hard, as Bohai Trimet is the largest employer in the region, employing around 580 people at the Harzgerode location and 98 in Sömmerda.
Bohai Trimet is known for producing transmission, chassis and body parts for German and Italian car manufacturers. The location in Harzgerode has been an important part of the European automotive industry for years. But the first job cuts have been looming since October 2023, and the number of jobs is now in jeopardy. However, insolvency administrator Olaf Spiekermann gives the all-clear: Despite the bankruptcy, production continues at the locations and the company continues to pay employees' wages.
Background to the bankruptcy
The reasons for the misery are complex. Damuszis, a representative of the company, blames the switch to e-mobility and high energy costs for the current situation. However, he also sees potential for the Harzgerode location and trusts in the specialist knowledge of the employees. Mayor Marcus Weise (CDU) recently made a clear statement: The city wants to do everything it can to support the process. “We stand behind our employees 100 percent,” he emphasizes.
In discussions with the Prime Minister, the Minister for Economic Affairs and the District Administrator, those responsible in the district and the state of Saxony-Anhalt have signaled their support. It becomes clear: the city absolutely wants to preserve the Harzgerode location. “We must not fall into lethargy now,” warns Weise to actively support the company.
Impact on the region
The bankruptcy sent shockwaves throughout the region. The industrial park in which Bohai Trimet operates is of great importance for many local institutions such as kindergartens, schools, fire departments and clubs.
The future of the plant in the Harz region now depends crucially on new investors, and initial discussions have already begun. The region is looking forward to the developments and hopes for a solution that will secure the jobs of the approximately 580 employees in Harzgerode and the 500 indirectly affected positions. It remains to be seen how the next few weeks and months will go. The situation is tense for employees and their families, and everyone is hoping for positive news that could bring stability back to the region. While the insolvency administrator sees positive signals in the proceedings, concerns about the long-term perspective remain.
