High risk of forest fires in Lower Saxony: How to protect yourself now!

In the coming days, the risk of forest fires in Lower Saxony will increase dramatically. From today, June 20, 2025, the medium forest fire warning level will apply in many regions. For some areas, including Lüchow, Uelzen and Celle, the high danger level 4 has even been declared. The highest warning level 5 could be reached in many parts of Lower Saxony on Sunday. This reports NDR.

The forecasts also show that temperatures inland will be between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius, which will further inflame the situation. The German Weather Service's forest fire danger index suggests that the risk of fires could decrease again from Monday, but until then precautionary measures are essential.

Prevention is required!

Most forest fires are known to be of human origin. It is therefore important for all forest visitors to adopt preventative measures. It is important that no open fires are lit and smoking in the forest is absolutely taboo until October 31st. This also applies to the improper disposal of charcoal and discarded cigarettes. The latter have often been the cause of dangerous fires in the past, as shown not least by the fire in Goldenstedter Moor in May, which was caused by a carelessly thrown away cigarette Lower Saxony.

A clear rule is: Barbecuing is only permitted in official places. Drivers should be careful not to park their vehicles on dry grass to avoid the risk of fires caused by hot catalytic converters. The fire department recommends calling 112 immediately if a fire is discovered.

The role of climate change

Climate change plays a crucial role in the risk of forest fires. Extreme weather conditions, such as frequent droughts and heavy rain events, challenge the static and dynamic properties of forests. Johann Goldammer, an expert in this field, points out that while less intensive farming can promote biodiversity, it also produces more dead wood, which acts as potential fuel. This increases the risk that fires will spread more quickly. Quarks points out that sandy areas and moorland areas in Lower Saxony are particularly at risk.

In order to effectively counter the danger, the authorities in Lower Saxony are relying on a system for the early detection and fighting of forest fires, which also includes modern camera technology and fire-fighting aircraft. A forest conversion policy is also being planned. This is intended to promote species-rich mixed forests and thus strengthen protection against future fires. Volunteer fire departments receive valuable support with extinguishing materials and protective clothing.

Every individual can make their contribution with the help of educational measures such as the “Brennpunkt Wald” campaign. We should all be aware of our responsibility and work together to ensure that our forests remain safe.
