Life-saving missions: Harz mountain rescue service in constant use in the event of accidents
The Harz is a popular destination for hikers, but nature also has its dangers. Every year, thousands of outdoor enthusiasts come to the region to enjoy the unique landscape. But as the statistics show, there are not only carefree days in nature. According to a report by News38 The Harz Mountain Rescue Service in Saxony-Anhalt went on 44 missions in the first half of 2023, a significant increase in the number of rescue missions.
The operations are spread across the two main mountain rescue groups in Wernigerode and Thale, which recorded 27 and 17 operations respectively. The difficult conditions in the region even required the use of a police helicopter for air rescue three times. Among the operations was a tragic incident in which a mountain bike rider without a protective helmet died after a fall on the Gelber Brink mountain pass.
Accidents and their causes
Accidents are not uncommon in the Harz Mountains. A climber fell on the Großer Feuerstein in April and had to be rescued with serious injuries. Matthias Kirmann from the mountain rescue service reports that most hikers, climbers and cyclists are generally well equipped, but many are unprepared. “There are spontaneous excursionists who want to go to the summit of the Brocken in sneakers and without a jacket,” he states, referring to the often unpredictable weather conditions in the region.
The mountain rescue service is the northernmost mountain rescue service in Germany and belongs to the German Red Cross. In Saxony-Anhalt, main groups are active in Thale and Wernigerode as well as a supporting group in Halberstadt. In total, around 120 men and women are involved in the Harz Mountain Rescue Service, 46 of whom are active members.
Rescue operations at a glance
In 2024, the mountain rescue service recorded around ten missions per month, for a total of 140 missions. Most incidents occurred in the summer months of July and August, with many injuries involving hiking and mountain biking. According to an analysis by mz.de 118 injured people were helped, including serious injuries and even fatal incidents.
The Harz Mountain Rescue Service is increasingly relying on air support in order to be able to provide quick help in impassable terrain. “These winch rescues are regularly trained by the mountain rescue service,” explains Kirmann, emphasizing the importance of preparation. There are also regular training courses for the emergency services, which include practical exercises with police helicopters.
The mountain rescue service has some clear recommendations for hikers: sturdy shoes, suitable clothing, sufficient water and provisions as well as a first aid kit should be part of the basic equipment. A fully charged cell phone can also be essential in emergencies as the control center can locate the location.
In conclusion, despite its beauty, the Harz also poses risks. To safely enjoy the outdoors, appropriate equipment and preparation is essential, such as MDR reported. In a region where nature and adventure come together, caution is advised.
