New tower for the Harzburg: Vision or controversial construction project?
There's a lot going on in Bad Harzburg at the moment: the Harzburg tower is about to make an exciting comeback! On June 29, 2025, the first design by Max Dudler, an internationally recognized architect, was presented. The project aims to revitalize the visibility of this historic site and its eventful history both for the region and for Germany as a whole. News38 reports that the planned attraction is primarily intended to benefit from castle tourism.
However, Dudler's draft is highly polarizing on social media, where some users are voicing their concerns. Critics particularly complain that the design does not look anything like a traditional castle tower. Nevertheless, Dudler is pleased about the great interest and emphasizes the importance of involving people in the planning process. He plans to create a “meeting place” that will attract both locals and tourists.
Architecture with vision
At around 27 meters high, the new tower will dominate the landscape and take visitors through seven floors. Dudler has already worked at numerous historical locations, such as Heidelberg Castle, and always pursues the goal of harmoniously combining old and new in architecture. Previous renovations of the tower stump, which had been in a dilapidated condition for years, have paved the way for this initiative. Dirk Junicke, chairman of the Historical Burgberg Association, presented the project during the 2024 annual general meeting die-harzburg.de.
The costs for implementing the new tower are estimated at 7 to 12 million euros. However, it is still unclear whether the draft will be implemented. Citizens can find out more about the plans on June 26, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. in Bündheim Castle. The event is free to attend and those interested are invited to register via email. Castle meeting in the Harz
The Harzburg has a long history, dating back to 1065, when it was built by Henry IV. However, in 1650 it was demolished and forgotten. Thanks to the Burgberg cable car, which was built in 1929, the Burgberg came into greater focus and sparked interest in restoration work. The support association has already carried out extensive security and excavations at the castle fountain and the powder tower in order to preserve the remains of the once proud Harz Castle deutsche-burgen.org.
The commitment to the Harz Castle is unbroken, and the upcoming presentation by Max Dudler is making the hearts of many castle lovers beat faster. It remains to be seen whether the design will ultimately prevail, but the anticipation of a new landmark in the Harz is already palpable.
