Walk ends turbulently: car broken into near Huysburg!
A relaxing walk can quickly turn into a nightmare. A hiker in the Harz region also had to experience this on Thursday afternoon, June 19th. After he parked his car in the parking lot at Huysburg, he returned to find that his passenger window had been smashed and his backpack, which was lying on the passenger seat, had been stolen. The items stolen included a smartphone, a wallet with 200 euros in cash and various keys. The police damage amounts to around 1,000 euros. The police at the Harz police station urge you not to leave any valuables visible in your car and to always lock it properly. A simple piece of advice that can often be crucial in avoiding unpleasant surprises. News38 reports that such incidents in the Harz are unfortunately not isolated cases.
In recent weeks, the region has struggled with a worrying increase in attacks on hikers. A particularly alarming incident occurred near a hiking hut in Ilsetal, where a 54-year-old woman from Lübeck was threatened with a box cutter by a man and a woman. The attackers demanded cash and jewelry worth a total of around 5,000 euros, which left the victim in shock. Here too, the perpetrators wore black jackets and had striking features such as short, dark hair. The MDR provides current information on these attacks and points out that the police are looking for witnesses.
Security situation in the Harz and Germany
The current robberies and thefts are part of a larger trend that is emerging in Germany. There has been a significant increase in thefts in recent years, especially in 2022 when 1.78 million thefts were recorded, which is a marked increase compared to previous years. The risk of being stolen when parking a vehicle should not be underestimated. Data shows that over 235,000 thefts from motor vehicles were recorded in 2022. Reason enough to exercise caution when parking and not to leave valuable items in the car. Statista provides information about the general crime situation and highlights that robbery crimes have also reached a worrying level with 38,000 cases.
The police are currently working intensively to improve the security situation in the hiking areas and are asking the public for help. Given the reports of robberies and thefts, it is advisable to hike in groups if possible and pay particular attention to your valuables. A simple text message to friends or sharing your location can be a valuable safeguard in difficult situations. Finally, we can only hope that such incidents will be uncovered quickly and that the Harz will once again become a safe place for nature lovers and hikers.
