The institution was originally founded in 1775 as a "Clausthaler Montanistische Leitstelle", which at that time primarily trained Steiger and civil servants for the Montan area in the Oberharz. Over the years, the educational offer expanded to engineers and scientists, which resulted in the rise to the Bergakademie in 1864 and ultimately to the Technical University in 1968.
