Clausthal University of Technology celebrates 250 years with a big ceremony!
On June 21, 2025, the Clausthal University of Technology A very special ceremony was celebrated to mark the university's 250th anniversary. Prime Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) praised the TU as a “flagship of Lower Saxony” that masterfully combines tradition and innovation. The ceremonial setting took place in the impressive Aula academica, a domed building that is considered one of the rare examples of university architecture in the Weimar Republic and amazes visitors.
But Clausthal University of Technology doesn’t just have architectural highlights to offer. The institution was originally founded in 1775 as the “Clausthal mining training center”, which at that time primarily trained climbers and civil servants for the mining sector in the Upper Harz. Over the years, the educational offerings expanded to include engineers and natural scientists, which led to the promotion to the Mining Academy in 1864 and ultimately to the Technical University in 1968. This development illustrates the motto of the anniversary: “Traditionally innovative”.
Science and region in focus
Today, Clausthal University of Technology is considered a small, practice-oriented university in Germany that has made a name for itself primarily in the areas of mining, geosciences and engineering. Water management is also given great importance - a remarkable project aims to ensure water quality in the Harz Mountains. This regional anchoring and the role as the largest employer in the Harz region make the university an important partner in the development of the entire area.
In the 2023/2024 winter semester, around 2,800 students from more than 100 countries will learn the challenges of a constantly changing professional world at Clausthal University of Technology. Research in the area of circular economy in particular has become increasingly important, and the state of Lower Saxony is supporting these efforts with 11 million euros. The TU is positioning itself as a pioneer for future developments and innovative teaching formats that are heavily influenced by digitalization.
Anniversary celebrations and highlights
The university's 250th anniversary celebrations are not limited to the feast day. They run from September 2024 to 2025 and are enriched by numerous events. The central festival week, which took place from June 15th to 22nd, 2025, offers an exciting mix of scientific, cultural and sporting events. In addition, a special postage stamp issued by the Ministry of Finance in Berlin marks the anniversary and honors this milestone for the institution.
Another creative aspect is the placement of a Harzer Wandernadel stamp box in front of the university to promote hiking tourism in the region. These small but important measures show the commitment of Clausthal University of Technology not only to its students, but also to the entire region.
At a time when technological developments and innovative teaching methods are becoming increasingly important, the Clausthal University of Technology remains a place that harmoniously balances tradition and progress. A lot has changed since it was founded in 1775, but the roots and the claim to offer quality and relevance in teaching and research remain.
