UNESCO inspectors in the Harz: Geopark is faced with crucial exam!

Harz, Deutschland - This day the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen is examined. A re -evaluation is pending every four years, and this time independent experts from different countries have traveled to examine the developments in the geopark. The delegation is made up of Sarina from Alxa Desert Geopark in China and Alberto Gil Toja from Geopark Sierra del Norte in Spain. The inspectors are currently busy exploring the diverse cultural landscape in the Harz, for example testing the iron -containing water of the steel source on the Wipperberg.

The examiners do not publicly express themselves during their visit, but record their observations in photographs. There was already positive feedback from Esther Czymoch and Dr. Volker Wilde, who could give the inspectors a good impression. The results of her investigation are finally summarized in a report to UNESCO, and the decision on the status of the geopark is expected to be made at the end of the year. The MDR reports that during the visit, new geopolitan boards at the steel source were also installed in order to offer the latest visitors an interactive learning offer.

a treasury of geological diversity

The Geopark "Harz - Braunschweig Land - Ostfalen" offers its guests the opportunity to hike in a few steps through millions of years of geological history. This region is not only national, but also internationally recognized, and for good reason. The geological and mineralogical diversity is impressive and is clearly presented in impressive landmarks that are geographically, culturally and historically important.

A total of 18 landmarks that include up to 14 special geo points. These geo-points represent special features of the area, such as unique rock deposits and important institutions that deal with the geology of the region. A short walk in the Harz makes it possible to experience the impressive geological stories up close. The Harinfo also provides information on this.

a sustainable future in the geopark

The geopark not only acts as a place of interest for tourists, but also as a model for sustainable developments. The UNESCO geoparks in Germany, including this geopark, are actively involved in areas such as education, research, landscape maintenance and sustainable tourism. They are members of the European Geopar Knetzwerk (EGN) and the Global Geoparknetzwerk (GGN). Recognition as a UNESCO-Geopark is not only a title, but also an incentive for further development, as the UNESCO Germany emphasizes.

The role of the geoparks will continue to develop in the coming years. Especially in education for sustainable development and in cooperation with Geoparks from the global south, an important challenge will be. Geoparks are not only islands of knowledge, but also active actors in global dialogue about social challenges, such as climate change. Here it becomes clear that the Geopark Harz can make an important contribution with its rich history and its impressive landscape.
