In the Harz, this picturesque region full of dense forests and idyllic villages, Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus from Hildesheim have fulfilled a dream. While looking for a second home, they discovered a charming moat house in the Upper Harz, which was intended to serve as a retreat and also to rent out a holiday apartment. The first steps toward modernizing the trench house seemed easy, but unexpected challenges quickly emerged. From an unreliable well that didn't provide enough water to a lack of access rights. The previous owners' fence did not correspond to the actual size of the property, which further complicated the situation. Access to the house was via a private path, for which an annual fee was payable. The Brockhaus therefore had to search for the previous owners in order to acquire additional land they needed. Despite these hurdles, they never gave up. They fought through legal wrangling and sought the support of cooperative authorities, eventually resolving the issues.
The Grabenhaus Rose holiday apartment
In addition to its own living area, the Grabenhaus also offers a cozy holiday apartment that can accommodate up to 6 people. With approximately 95 square meters of spacious living space and three bedrooms, as well as two bathrooms, including one with a relaxing bathtub, it is the perfect accommodation for families or groups. However, the Brockhaus family did not take the opening of the holiday apartment lightly. The rental requirements, such as providing firefighting water for the fire department, were more complex than expected. Nevertheless, there is positive feedback from guests who enjoyed their stay in the Upper Harz. Anke Brockhaus said they never regretted the purchase, even though the work can sometimes seem overwhelming. Their determination and the relaxing time in the north ultimately strengthened the couple.
