Train service to the Brocken suspended due to hurricane force winds – safety comes first!

In the region around the Brocken in the Harz the motto is currently: “Stop, no further!” The Harz narrow-gauge railways stopped train traffic between Schierke and the highest mountain in northern Germany today, October 27, 2025, at 12:43 p.m. The reason for this measure is the persistent hurricane force winds that are expected in the region. The first snow with temperatures of minus two degrees fell on the Brocken on Sunday, October 26th, but did not stay due to the lack of cold. While train traffic to Germany's most famous mountain peak is suspended, all other trains on the Harz narrow-gauge railways continue to run as scheduled, as MDR reports.

The wind is currently showing its worst side. According to a warning from the German Weather Service, speeds of up to 100 km/h are expected on the Brocken, which will result in an official severe weather warning. In addition, further warnings of severe squalls will apply from this evening at 8:00 p.m. until October 28th at 8:00 p.m., as Weather Service explains. Based on this warning, experts advise securing free-standing objects and paying particular attention to falling objects outdoors.

Planned train connections affected

The suspension of train services affects connections 8931 at 10:09 a.m. from Schierke and 8932 at 11:07 a.m. from Brocken. This package of measures was taken due to the unpredictable weather conditions. According to the MZ assessments, the high altitudes in the Harz, especially the Brocken, may continue to be at risk from stormy weather conditions. The situation for Thursday and Friday has already been assessed with a suspension of train traffic.

The current weather situation requires those responsible at the Harz narrow-gauge railways to have a good hand in ensuring the safety of passengers. Above 1000 meters, hikers and visitors must be careful of falling trees and falling objects.

The situation continues to be monitored closely and travelers are asked to inform themselves in advance about the status of connections and make adjustments if necessary. Hopefully, when the weather clears up again, rail traffic on the Brocken will continue to run smoothly.
