The future of the Harz is shaky: Bohai Trimet files for bankruptcy!

The economic challenges in the Harz are coming to a head and are causing worried faces in the region. A major supplier to the automotive industry Bohai Trimet Automotive Holding GmbH, has filed for bankruptcy. The Halle (Saale) district court has officially opened insolvency proceedings, which particularly affects the 580 employees at the Harzgerode location. In Sömmerda, 98 workers are also affected. This is happening at a time when the region is already heavily burdened by economic changes.

The Bohai Trimet is not an unknown quantity in the automotive industry. The company produces transmission, chassis and body parts for various manufacturers in Germany and Italy and has been an integral part of the production chain in the European automotive industry for years. Nevertheless, the first jobs had to be cut as early as October 2023. Despite the challenges, production is currently continuing; The employees are receiving wages again, and the plants in Harzgerode and Sömmerda have resumed work.

The situation in the Harz and the voices of those responsible

The situation not only caused a shock among the employees, the mayor of Harzgerode, Marcus Weise (CDU), also reacted with concern. In April he said that the city wanted to do everything it could to support the bankruptcy. “We stand behind our employees 100 percent,” emphasized Weise. He highlights the potential of the location and appeals to the specialist knowledge of the workforce. He also held talks with the Prime Minister, the Economics Minister and the district administrator, all of whom signaled their support.

The mayor is also aware of the far-reaching impact that a closure of the company would have on the region. Many local institutions such as kindergartens, schools, fire departments and clubs depend on the existence of the industrial park. In this tense situation, it is important not to fall into lethargy, Weise continued. The switch to e-mobility and high energy costs are among the challenges that Bohai Trimet has to overcome.

Look at other suppliers in the Harz

But Bohai Trimet is not the only supplier in trouble. Those too Transmission and drive technology Wernigerode GmbH (GAW) and Schlote Harzgerode GmbH have filed for bankruptcy, affecting around 280 employees. The reasons are the parent company's financial difficulties, while Volkswagen's agreed purchase quantities were not met. IG Metall sees bankruptcy as foreseeable, but has not yet given up hope of restructuring.

The situation is therefore tense and it will be exciting to see whether we can attract new investors to Bohai Trimet. The future of the plant in Harzgerode depends crucially on these discussions. It remains to be hoped that those responsible will move forward with cooperation with customers and investors as quickly as possible in order to secure production on site.

Such crises hit the region particularly hard and require quick action from everyone involved in order to secure valuable jobs and the economic basis for citizens.
