Educational march in Burg: Fight for better schools and fair teaching!

The 3rd educational march in Burg is just around the corner! On Monday, June 16, many of the city's citizens will take to the streets to fight for important education issues. The initiators of the march, Yvonne Grundmann and Jacqueline Gentzsch, are passionate about improving educational conditions in their region. As Meetingpoint reports, this will be a significant event that mobilizes the voices of the people of Burg.

Not much has happened in front of the Diesterweg Secondary School since the first school conference, except that the school now has a second teaching staff member, which reflects the increasing number of students. The initiators demand, among other things, that there should be no cuts in teaching hours and that teachers urgently need more support. Smaller classes, more specialists and sufficient time for preparation and further training are on the wish list of those involved.

The new school law in Saxony-Anhalt

At the same time, this movement is influenced by the current political situation. On Wednesday, June 11th, the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt passed a new school law, which was described as a milestone for the educational landscape. Education Minister Eva Feußner announced that the amendment would bring about far-reaching changes in order to create a better school structure. According to mz.de, the focus is increasingly being placed on school associations, flexibility in school organization and increasing the minimum number of students.

The GEW, on the other hand, criticizes this amendment as a continuation of the cuts that are already burdening many children, parents and teachers. Ingo Doßmann from GEW Saxony-Anhalt warns that students with special learning needs are not sufficiently taken into account in this reform. The demands are clear: >Education must be accessible to everyone without compromising on quality.

The opinions of citizens

On the evening of June 16th, citizens in Burg will have the opportunity to express their opinion on the amendment to the school law. This discussion could be very important for the city and its schools. Education is not only seen as the cornerstone of individual well-being, but also as the key to social justice and participation.

The school law itself was designed to take current developments into account and to clearly define school policy objectives. Terms such as “race” are removed from the legal text and the aim is to adapt the school career recommendations. For many, this is a step in the right direction, while others such as the Die Linke and ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS factions submitted different amendments to guarantee even more progress, as can be read on the State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt page.

Saxony-Anhalt is struggling with a shortage of teachers, which the new regulations can only alleviate to a limited extent. From August 1, 2027, there will be minimum student numbers that will be higher in primary and secondary schools. This could result in small, often rural schools being forced to close, dividing the education community.

The city of Burg is facing a lively and decisive week. Citizen engagement is required to set the course for the future of education. A good hand indeed!
