On August 17, 2025, the DFB Cup experienced another disaster for Hannover 96: The team made its way to Energie Cottbus, but the trip was accompanied by scandalous incidents. While several hundred fans from Hanover were traveling on a regional train to Lübben (Dahme-Spreewald district), there were attacks on the Energie Cottbus fans. This reported NDR.
On the regional train, around 200 Hannover 96 fans are said to have asked other travelers to hand over their fan paraphernalia. There were also reports of physical attacks, even involving children. A 37-year-old suspect was temporarily arrested and is suspected of stealing T-shirts and a scarf, but officers did not find any stolen items on him. He was also released and was not allowed to attend the game. Video recordings of the incidents are currently being evaluated.
Incidents during and after the game
The incident further escalated when FC Energie Cottbus fan paraphernalia was burned in the 96 block during the game. A police spokesman confirmed the fire in the guest block, but could not clarify whether it was stolen goods. What was particularly alarming for the safety of the spectators was that no members of other football clubs that were enemies of Cottbus were seen around the game. After the game, there were further riots on the way back: Hannover 96 supporters rioted at a rest area on the A2 and attacked an employee.
Hannover 96, the club at the center of these incidents, also reported that they would like to examine the incident carefully. It was the third time in a row that the team failed to make it into the second round of the cup. Fans and those responsible are concerned about the development of the mood and the image of the club.
