Heat in Gommern: How to protect yourself from danger at Lake Balaton!
Heat, swimming fun and safety questions: A heat wave of up to 40 degrees Celsius is expected in Germany on July 2, 2025. Especially in the unified municipality of Gommern, where temperatures of up to 36 degrees are forecast, many bathers are drawn to the popular Dannigkow campsite on Lake Balaton. Campsite manager Christian Friedrich reports 200 to 300 day guests on the first holiday weekend. But the sun brings not only joy, but also serious dangers.
Lifeguards from the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) are on site every day to ensure safety. Luis Morche (18) and Gretha Louise Winkler (17) are on duty until at least 6 p.m., and in extreme heat even until 8 p.m. Given the extreme temperatures, it is important that bathers consciously focus on their safety. The DLRG warns urgently about circulatory shock and gives tips on how to safely survive these heat periods. Bathers should enter the water slowly and shower beforehand or at least cool their feet so as not to overload the circulatory system.
Important safety tips
The symptoms of impending heat injury can be unpleasant: headaches, dizziness and severe malaise are common signs. Parents in particular should make sure that their children receive sufficient sun protection and apply sunscreen regularly. Bathing while intoxicated is considered extremely dangerous as it significantly increases the risk of swimming accidents.
The hot summer days are currently often associated with an increase in swimming accidents. So we have to be careful not only in Gommern, but throughout Germany. According to reports from Merkur, there have been several tragic incidents that demonstrate how dangerous careless behavior in the water can be. At least 15 people drowned in swimming accidents in Germany last weekend, making it one of the deadliest weekends in the last decade. The DLRG already recorded 411 drownings in 2024, a worrying increase of 31 cases compared to the previous year.
Regular safety precautions
The DLRG points out that many swimmers overestimate their abilities, especially older people who are out of practice due to Corona restrictions. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to always remain vigilant, heed warnings and respect personal boundaries. Accurately assessing the dangers in the water, be it strong currents or sudden temperature changes, can mean the difference between life and death.
As DLRG spokesman Martin Holzhause announced, the number of bathing accidents is expected to continue to rise and he is calling for an expansion of patrolled bathing resorts nationwide in order to improve the protection of bathers. The direction is clear: In the summer temperatures, good planning is crucial - go swimming early or in the evening, drink enough and always look for a suitable place in the shade. Parasols can be rented at the campsite for a fee of five euros plus a deposit.
The message is clear: inform yourself, be careful and enjoy the summer to the fullest without putting yourself in danger. Protect yourself and your loved ones and make the most of these hot days!
