Combine harvester in Genthin ablaze – 10 hectares lost!
A major fire incident occurred in Genthin OT Gladau on August 12, 2025: A Claas combine harvester was on fire and completely burned out. The vehicle was in arable land between Brandenstein and Gladau when the fire broke out at 6:04 p.m. Despite the quick intervention of 56 firefighters from seven different fire departments, the destruction of the combine harvester could not be prevented and property damage was in the low six-figure range. Approximately 10 hectares of grain were also affected, resulting in low five-figure damage to the area. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the criminal police have started an investigation and confiscated the vehicle. Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident, as Magdeburg Klickt reports.
A combine harvester fire is not uncommon. R+V Versicherung has determined that the dangers for such harvesters come from various sources, including straw dust, sparks and hot hydraulic oil. Interestingly, the insurance company has recorded a significant decrease in damage to combine harvesters this year by around 30 percent compared to the previous year. This positive development could be due to several factors: long-term good weather conditions in the summer period as well as increased awareness among farmers about fire risks and improved technology that increases protection, as Versicherungswirtschaft Aktuell notes.
Fire prevention tips
To prevent such fires, there are some recommendations that farmers should follow. The Federal Association of Fire Protection Specialist Companies points out that regular dust removal and maintenance of vehicles, equipment and harvesting machines are essential. Hay and straw are particularly sensitive and should be stored dry and checked regularly to avoid spontaneous combustion. When carrying out work that may cause sparks, at least one fire extinguisher should be nearby and flammable materials should be removed. It is also advisable to generally equip agricultural machinery with fire extinguishers and to offer training on occupational safety. Further important measures to prevent fire can be found at Agrar Today.
These incidents and the resulting findings are further evidence of the pressure on farmers to keep their equipment in good working order. And how important it is to take precautions to protect your belongings and crops. The combination of weather conditions, technological advances and precautionary measures can be crucial to minimizing fires in the future.
