Forest fire near Zerbst: Fire brigade fights against flashing embers!
A spectacular forest fire preoccupied people on Saturday in the Zerbst district of Jütrichau, in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district. The fire brigade was able to bring the flames that broke out on Saturday afternoon under control in the evening, but pockets of embers continue to flare up. This means that the extinguishing work continues. A total of around 150 firefighters and a federal police helicopter are on duty to finally extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Help came from firefighters from Dessau-Roßlau and the Salzlandkreis, among others, as MDR reports.
Federal highway 184, which was closed during the operation, has now been reopened to traffic. However, motorists are asked to drive carefully so as not to hinder emergency services in their work. The railway line between Dessau and Magdeburg was also temporarily closed, meaning travelers had to take detours.
Wildlife and Environment
Particular attention is also paid to the wild animals that were frightened by the extinguishing work. Forest fires can not only cause direct damage, but also have long-term effects on biodiversity and the stability of forest ecosystems. As the Federal Environment Agency explains, forest fires can release emissions that affect human health, including fine dust and greenhouse gases. In addition, young and sparse coniferous forests are particularly susceptible to such fires.
The causes of forest fires are often diverse. In 2023, no specific cause could be determined for 51% of fires. In many cases, human action is responsible, such as negligence or arson. The analysis by the Federal Environment Agency shows that careless behavior by forest visitors, campers or children is the cause in more than half of negligent cases. It remains to be seen whether this also applies to the current fire at Zerbst, as the exact cause is still unclear.
