Water shortage in Saxony-Anhalt: watering ban and drought threaten gardens!
The summer heat in Saxony-Anhalt is clearly noticeable and is prompting the first serious measures. Due to persistent drought, some districts have already issued bans on taking water from wells, lakes and rivers for irrigation. This situation particularly concerns that Jerichower Land, where watering was severely restricted in cities such as Burg, Gommern, Genthin, Biederitz and Parey. In the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, water withdrawal for irrigation purposes is also prohibited during the day.
The weather forecast doesn't bode well: temperatures above 35 degrees are no longer uncommon. The cities of Dessau-Roßlau and Mansfeld-Südharz have already taken measures to limit the irrigation of gardens, sports fields and public green spaces from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Stendal district is also in the process of developing new regulations for water withdrawal and other districts such as Börde and Anhalt-Bitterfeld are also considering similar regulations.
Crops and viticulture in danger
But it's not just the city's water supply that is affected; Agriculture is also suffering significantly from the current drought. Reports show that farmers and winemakers are complaining of a serious lack of rain extending over an unusually long period of time. A year ago, the same circles expressed understanding for state subsidies. The question arises as to whether current farm management strategies are sufficient to survive a potential drought.
Looking ahead to the coming months, it is crucial that agricultural water management is adjusted accordingly. Innovative irrigation methods, such as using solar power to irrigate 3,500 m² of lawn, could receive more attention in the future. The discussion about the responsibility of the rich one percent - whose lifestyle causes significant greenhouse gas emissions - is also playing an ever-growing role in the climate protection discourse.
A look at the basics of water scarcity
The Federal Environment Agency presented solutions for water management in a research project. The results show that water scarcity in Germany is subject to a variety of influencing factors. On the one hand, climatic conditions and seasonal precipitation are crucial; on the other hand, there are problems with water quality, for example due to nitrate pollution, and the increasing demand for water in metropolitan regions should not be ignored.
In order to avoid future conflicts of use, the project recommends, among other things, promoting water efficiency and improving water retention. Stronger cooperation between the different user groups can also help to distribute water resources more fairly. The need for a legal framework and new infrastructural solutions for water reuse is becoming increasingly clear, while the consideration of natural ecosystems in water management considerations is also being called for.
The current situation makes it clear: climate change has long-lasting effects on water availability, and the developments in Saxony-Anhalt are just one example of a complex problem that affects everyone. It remains to be hoped that the measures taken and future strategies to improve water use are as successful as necessary.
